Over two hundred residents of Sharada Quarters, Kano, were on Friday, June 3, 2022 reportedly hospitalized after inhaling chemicals from a cylinder dismantled by metal scrappers.

According to reports, the victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Sharada Industrial Hospital and Ja’en Hospital, for urgent medical attention.

The Kano Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nuradeen Abdullahi, confirmed the incident to NAN in Kano.

“The cylinder chemical explosion occurred on Friday at about 4:00 p.m., at Sharada Industrial Area.

“The victims were suffocated and unconscious,” he said.

After inhaling hazardous chemical from the cylinder demolished by several metal scrappers, the victims slumped and became unconscious, according to a witness, Sani Muhammad.

He claimed that the chemicals in the cylinder leaked into the air, rendering anyone who breathed it comatose.

Hussaini Muhammad, the Chief Medical Director of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, claimed the hospital has received over 70 casualties, 65 of whom were in stable condition.

“A total of 35 casualties were treated at Sharada Industrial Hospital, while 96 were treated at Ja’en Hospital,” he added.

In the meantime, Sadiya Faruk, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, paid a visit to some of the hospitalized victims.

Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs, was her representative.

The minister praised the hospital administrations, as well as NEMA, SEMA, and the Nigerian Red Cross, for their assistance to the victims during the event.

She assured the victims that the ministry will assist them.

The rescue squad included NEMA, the Nigerian Red Cross, and the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, according to NAN.
