Chief Pete Edochie, (born March 7, 1947), is a celebrated Nigerian actor and television personality. He is considered one of Africa’s most talented actors and father figures to the aspiring ones.

He has been honoured with an Industry Merit Award by Africa Magic and Lifetime Achievement by Africa Film Academy. Although a seasoned administrator and broadcaster.

Pete Edochie came into prominence in the 1980s when he played the lead role of Okonkwo in an NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s all-time best-selling novel, Things Fall Apart.

Pete Edochie descends from the Igbo people of Nigeria and is a Catholic. In 2003, he was honoured as a Member of the Order of the Niger by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Early Life & Education

Pete Edochie was born on March 7, 1947 in Enugu, Nigeria. He hails from Anambra State but was raised in Zaria, Kaduna.

Rita Edochie is the sister-in-law of Pete Edochie aunt to both Yul Edochie and Muna Obiekwe.

He is still very much alive, disregard his burial rumors. He has brother named Tony Edochie.

He began his primary education at St. Patrick’s and St. James Primary School, Zaria. Then, he proceeded to St. John’s College for secondary education.

Subsequently, Edochie attended the School of Journalism and Television in England and did some overseas courses.

After secondary school, Pete Edochie worked with Nigerian Railway Corporation before moving to England to study. Then after school, he got into broadcasting in 1967.

Personal Life

Pete Edochie got married to Josephine Edochie at age 22, and the union is blessed with six children: 5 boys and one girl.

He is the father of Yul Edochie and Linc Edochie. He also has grandchildren, namely Dani Edochie, Kambi Edochie, Karl Edochie, and Victory Zane Chukwubuike Yul-Edochie.

Two of his sons, Linc and Yul Edochie, are popular because they are also professional actors in the industry.

Career

Pete Edochie began his career at 20 when he got into the broadcasting corporation. He started as a junior program assistant and rose to the position of director, where he acted in different directorial capacities. However, he left the radio station and joined Nollywood because the government decided to politicise the affairs of the radio station.

Pete Edochie already featured in Things Fall Apart and had even won international awards and recognition before his enrollment into Nollywood.

The first time he went on stage was in 1962 at age 15 when he was a student at St. John’s College. He was featured in the drama; Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.

After that, Pete Edochie came into the limelight after playing a leading role, Okonkwo in the 1980s NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart.

As a result, BBC came to Nigeria to interview him, and he also got some international recognition. Pete Edochie has also gone on to feature in movies such as Oduduwa (2000), Battle Line (2002), Rejection Son (2003), Set Up, Lost Kingdom, e.t.c.

In 2005, the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria placed Pete Edochie and several other actors, including Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Nkem Owoh, Ramsey Nouah, Stella Damasus, and Richard Mofe Damijo, on a one-year ban from filming after they were said to have been collecting huge fees from producers due to their A-list celebrity status.

The ban placed on these actors was seen as doom in the Nigerian film business, but currently, the actors are back in filming.

In 2009, Pete Edochie was kidnapped and later released by his captors unharmed.

In 2020, Pete Edochie played a lead role in a movie titled “Fatal Arrogance“, which generated many controversies.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, also known as Shiites, attack the veteran Nollywood actor over his role in a new movie, insisting that the film attempts to portray the union as a terrorist group.

The actor, however, insisted that he is not responsible for whatever issues the movie might generate, insisting the movie producers should be held accountable.

Veteran Actor Pete Edochie is an award-winning actor. He has received recognition both locally and internationally. For instance, he was inducted into the hall of fame in 2003, shortly before being honoured as a Member of the Order of Nigeria. His other awards include;
