The governor of the state of Pernambuco reported on Monday, 30th May 2022 that the death toll in Brazil’s north-east has grown to 84 as a result of landslides triggered by heavy rains.

“We know that aid is really difficult in the early hours. It’s now up to you to take meaningful action. I’ve met with all of the mayors to devise a strategy for determining which actions require government assistance at this time, “Paulo Camara remarked.

In 14 areas surrounding Recife, Pernambuco’s capital, a state of emergency has been issued.

Mr. Camara announced the disbursement of 100 million Brazilian reals ($21 million) in aid.

Storms hit the region on Wednesday, and 79 people were killed over the weekend alone.

The state administration of Pernambuco reported that more than 200 mm of rain fell in less than 24 hours in the greater Recife area. There are still 56 individuals missing, and approximately 4,000 people have been displaced from their homes.

“Although it has stopped raining for the time being, we expect additional heavy rains in the following days,” Regional Development Minister Daniel Ferreira stated. So the most important thing is to maintain safety precautions.”

Extreme rain has battered Brazil repeatedly in recent months. In December, downpours caused two dams to burst in nearby Bahia state, killing dozens and submerging entire streets.
