He was born on 17th November 1965 in Lagos State in the south western part of Nigeria. He is a native of Okrika, a small village in Rivers State in the south southern part of Nigeria but grew up in Surulere, Lagos State in the south western part of Nigeria, where he completed both his primary and secondary school education and obtained both his First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate.

After completing his primary and secondary school education, Sam Dede proceeded to University of Port Harcourt in River State, Nigeria and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts. After his National Youth Service (NYSC), Sam Dede came back to University of Port Harcourt and obtained his Masters Degree in Theatre Arts. While still in the university as an undergraduate, Sam Dede was actively involved in stage drama and performing art. He started acting on stage and appearing on several television soap opera as an undergraduate back in his days in the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria.

Sam Dede is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Port-Harcourt in River State, Nigeria where he lectures in the Department of Theatre Arts. He is one of the pioneers of the Nigerian movie industry popularly known as Nollywood and has contributed immensely to the growth of Nollywood in Nigeria and rest of the world. He has been in the Nigerian movie industry for over 20 years and has acted in more than 350 Nollywood movies.

Sam Dede joined the Nigerian movie industry popularly known as Nollywood in 1995 and rose to fame after starring in the Nollywood blockbuster movie “Ijele” a movie he acted alongside with Gentle Jack and Genevieve Nnaji. In 2005, Sam Dede won the Africa Movie Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He has also won the award for Most Prominent Actor in Nigeria at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
