    The police has arraigned a 36-year-old lawyer, Abasiesebanga Ikoiwak, and five others for allegedly killing her 41-year-old husband, Barrister Godwin Ikoiwak.
    According to information gathered, Ikoiwak, who was a native of Eket Local Government Area, had reportedly died a few days after the deceased told his friend and former classmate, Barrister Sunny Anyanwu in a phone conversation that he was having issues with his wife over infidelity.
    Narrating how the deceased died before an Uyo High Court, Anyanwu said that the deceased hinted him that he reported the matter to his wife’s family who invited him to a meeting in their family compound in Nung Udoe Itak, Ikono Local Government Area, but did not return home alive.
    Anyanwu who is the 7th prosecution witness in the matter, also said that the late Barrister told him that his wife was having s3xual relationship with her former boss, a legal practitioner, Barrister, C.I. Odoh.
    He said the deceased husband told him that his wife had stayed with a Catholic priest, Rev. Father Maurice Mbeke as a house help and the catholic priest impregnated her and they had a child who is now 19 years old named after her maternal grandfather.
    According to the prosecution witness, the late Barrister did not know that the boy who has been living with him in his house for years, was his wife’s son, because the wife had told him that the child was her younger brother.
    He said, the deceased told him that each time his wife said she was pregnant, he does not set his eyes on her, until after the delivery of the baby, when she will present it to him and say this is your child.
    The prosecution team led by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Akwa Ibom State, Barr. Joseph Umoren tendered the audio recordings which was played in the open court.
    Until his death, Barrister Ikoiwak was a state counsel with the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Justice.

    The marriage between Pastor Joshua Ajagunigbala and his wife, Rita Ajagunigbala has been dissolved.
    The 22-year marriage collapsed in Ekiti State after a herbalist died on top of the pastor’s wife during s*x romp in a hotel.
    Accordng to P.M.EXPRESS, Pastor Joshua stated that his marriage was dissolved at the Ekiti State Customary Court after he filed a divorce suit seeking for the dissolution of the marriage with Rita on the grounds of adultery.
    The petitioner, Pastor Ajagunigbala, during the hearing prayed the Court to dissolve the union on the ground of adultery and the custody of his children be given to him.
    In evidence, he told the Court that he had not paid the dowry of the respondent and they had lived together for more than 22 years and had children.
    He also informed the Court that it was the third time he had taken her to Court on the ground of adultery, stating that the respondent in 2017 started having an illicit affair with a herbalist called Ifidayomi a.k.a Ejiogbe, who is now late.
    He narrated that the Herbalist died on top of the respondent while having s3xual intercourse in a hotel at Ikere-Ekiti on 2nd January, 2023, which led to a commotion and made thugs to destroy his house and his church at Ikere.
    He lamented that her action led to his suspension by his Church authority and because of this, he is no longer interested in the union and pleaded with the Court to dissolve the union and give him custody of his children.
    Mrs. Ajagunigbala, in response, admitted having s*xual relationship with the late herbalist. She stated that her relationship with the Herbalist was because of lack of care from the petitioner. She said that she had been the one responsible for the feeding of the children and their school fees. She claimed that she had incurred so much debt, which the late Ejiogbe helped her to offset.
    During the hearing, the Court noted that their marriage was illegal because payment of dowry was not involved in the union as such there was no marriage to dissolve.
    The President of the Court, Mr. Joseph Oyedele, while declaring judgment on the matter, held that there was no legal customary marriage between the two of them, adding that they are free to go their separate ways.
    He said, “Having gone through all the oral evidence presented before this Court, it was discovered that there was no legal customary marriage between parties herein and there is no marriage available between parties to dissolve”.
    “The Court hereby order that the parties are now free to go on their own without disturbing the peace of each other.”
    The Court ordered, the petitioner, Mr. Ajagunigbala, to take full responsibility of the welfare and education of the last two children the union produced because they are still minors.
    “On the issue of the custody of the children, the Court can only order on the last two children of the marriage because they are yet to reach the age of majority. The first two children are free to decide under whose care they can live between the two parties because they are no longer minors.”
    “However, the Court order that the last two children of the association (Olarewaju and Victoria Ajagunigbala) are to be with the petitioner and the petitioner is to be responsible for their welfare and education.”

    President Muhammadu Buhari has on Friday 21st-April-2023 thanked Nigerians for tolorating him during his eight years in power.

    The president expressed his gratitude on Friday, when residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, paid him Sallah homage.

    Buhari begged those who were hurt while he was carrying out his constitutional duties to forgive him.

    The nation’s leader stated that he considers himself lucky in the achievements he has made in his political career.

    He said: “Thank you for tolerating me. I consider myself lucky to have been a governor, minister, head of state and now President for two terms.”

    He commended residents of the FCT for being tolerant hosts, but stated that he has decided to stay as far away as possible from Abuja after handing over.

    He said “I can’t wait to go home. I deliberately arranged to be as far away as possible from you people.”

    While going down memory lane on how he lost elections three times and ended up at the Supreme Court, he said that it was technology through the Permanent Voters Card, PVC, that came to his rescue in 2015.

    Buhari was sworn in as the President on May 29th, 2015 for a four year tenure. He was re-elected and inaugurated on May 29th, 2019 for another four year tenure.

    The wife of the Ondo State Governor, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has admitted that she’s struggling to stop her husband, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu from eating concoctions prepared by his mistress.
    Betty made the revelation on her social media page.
    “… I have to be at (the) gate not to allow any concoction to get in,” Mrs Akeredolu wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday, 20th-April-2023.
    She also posted a picture of herself and her husband sitting on a couch and added: “Cough! I have carried my love away to a place he loves. Odoyewu,” using R&B singer Kizz Daniel’s song to slam her critics.
    The governor had recently confirmed that he was sick but said there was “no cause for alarm” over his frail health, adding that he was recuperating speedily.
    The latest post came barely a few weeks that her husband (Mr Akeredolu, the Ondo governor) travelled abroad for his official “annual” leave.

     

    A spokesman for the governor, Richard Olatunde, had in a statement said the leave would last 15 working days, adding that Mr Akeredolu had already written to the House of Assembly and Deputy Governor Lucky Orimisan would act on his behalf pending his return on April-26th-2023
    While on leave, critics of Mr Akeredolu’s family suggested that the governor travelled outside the country to treat himself for an undisclosed ailment. The ailment had prompted him to take local herbs from one of his female aides, alleged to be the governor’s mistress.
    In January, the governor’s wife cried out that her husband was on a “sick bed” after eating a concoction from one of his female aides, Bunmi Ademosun.
    In a leaked audio file obtained by Peoples Gazette, Mrs Anyanwu-Akeredolu accused Ms Ademosun, the special adviser to the governor on multilateral and inter-governmental affairs, of “sneaking” to give her husband local herbs to drink, warning the female aide to “stay away from her husband.”

    The Nigerian Police force have been slammed for arresting Cynthia Chioma Anthony alleged to have defrauded a German citizen of $220,000 after promising to marry him.
    Ashraf Sanusi, son of the deposed Emir of Kano, Mohammad Sanusi II condemned the police for arresting the lady.
    Recall that operatives of the Police Special Fraud Units (PSFU) recently arrested Anthony for allegedly obtaining $220,000 by false pretence from the German.
    Reacting via his Instastory, Sanusi wrote: “Technically, she didn’t do anything illegal, right? Since he sent her money willingly not as payment for good or service, she’s not meant to be arrested. What she did is bad, but not illegal.”
    Insisting there is not always a law for immorality, he added: “Again, what she did is very wrong, but they [police] are not legally allowed to arrest her because she promised to marry someone and didn’t do it. And they are not allowed to reverse the money as it was given willingly even though the person was expecting something else.”

    Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has made a revelation concerning how Nyesom Wike became Governor of Rivers State.
    In a recent interview on Arise TV, Dino Melaye revealed that former first lady, Patience Jonathan, helped Nyesom Wike become the Governor of River State.
    Melaye also alleged that former Governors of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Odili, contributed to Wike’s political ascent.
    Melaye accused Wike of being ungrateful to those who helped him in his political career, while he boasts about the people he has assisted.
    He stated, “Governor Odili made him chairman of his local government. So he has been helped by somebody. After Governor Odili helped him, Governor Amaechi made him chief of staff.     While he acknowledges that everyone gets helped by someone in their political careers, Melaye asserts that assistance should not be used as a means of control and domination.

    Five Men Burnt To Death For Alleged Trying To Steal Tricycle in Onitsha, Anambra State (Photos)

    Five men were burnt to death after they allegedly attempted to snatch a tricycle operator of his tricycle in Onitsha, Anambra State. 

    The incident occurred at old Nkpor road, close to the headquarters of People’s Club, in the commercial city of Onitsha on Saturday, March 25th, 2023. 

     

    According to an eyewitness, the suspects allegedly tried to steal a tricycle from the owner in broad daylight when they ran out of luck and were caught.

    “Mob who gathered after the men were rounded up, refused the advice of some people to call in the police. They first started by striping the men naked and beating them up, and eventually, some people brought old tyres and fuel, and they were set ablaze. It was a very bad sight today, and everyone watched and supervised, while the men burnt to death,” he said.

    Graphic videos from the scene were posted on social media. 

    In one of the videos, a suspect could be heard screaming ‘Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,” while crying for help.

    Taraba State Governor-elect, Lt. Col Agbu Kefas (retd.), on Saturday said he would keep all the promises he made during the electioneering, noting that “the era of promise and fail is over.”

    While stating that his victory at the polls was part of the deal he struck with the people, he said that the people have reposed in him their future and hopes and he would not take it lightly.

    Kefas made the known in a statement by his Spokesperson, Emmanuel Bello, obtained by journalists in Abuja.

    In a statement, he said:

    “Giving me this mandate is a serious matter and the social contract I have with the people is one I take seriously. I won’t play with their mandate. I promise to fulfill all I said and we shall accomplish them in our first 100 days in office.

    Kefas said leadership is a collective duty and that he looks forward to the citizens doing their part by supporting the programmes of his coming administration.

    He stressed that he was coming basically to make the youths very secure, especially in employment, infrastructure and credible developments.

    “In keeping with the mantra of my leadership which is moving forward, I intend to hit the ground running. We shall not leave anyone behind. We would carry everyone along the journey.”

    Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday 25th-March-2023 recalled his relationship with Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State and current Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as his appointees.

    He said they about the best appointments he made while he was President.

    The former Nigerian leader also condemned the “persistent” discrimination against people of southeastern extraction, which he describes as Igbophobia.

    Obasanjo spoke at an event to commemorate Governor Soludo’s one year in office.

    In Obasanjo’s administration which spanned 1999 to 2007, Soludo served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), while Okonjo-Iweala was the Minister of Finance.

    The former President stated that Soludo, who worked closely with him as an economic adviser, “never misadvised me”, and the economist’s performance impressed him so much so that he was asked to lead the apex bank.

    According to the 85-year-old statesman, Soludo was the second Nigerian CBN governor who was not a commercial banker of some sort.

    However, soon after appointing the academic, the ex-president said, he found himself in an encounter with a dissenting voice.

    “Somebody came to me and said, ‘Wow! You have ruined the economy of Nigeria.’

    “I said, ‘How?’ He said, ‘An Igbo woman, Minister of Finance; an Igbo man, Governor of the Central Bank? Then you have clearly completed the task of ruining the economy of Nigeria.’

    “I don’t know why he said that, except for what I can call Igbophobia, and I don’t take that lightly. It remains, it persists.

    “But when you have that type of thing that was said to me and the type of thing that you know is going on, as I have just called it, what do we do with it?

    “I believe we have to go back to the scripture, which says we must conquer evil with good.

    “And whoever you are, wherever people are afraid of you, you must make yourself friendly to those who are afraid of you and earn their friendship by being good to them, and that is what we have to do,” Obasanjo said.

    The former president noted from his personal experience, nothing wins friendship like one being friendly.

    He added that the appointments of Okonjo-Iweala and Soludo were “probably the best of the appointments that I made when I was president”.

    Native Doctor Murders Mentally Challenged Man During Treatment In Adamawa State

    The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 48-year-old native doctor identified as Ezekiel Buba, for allegedly killing a mentally challenged man identified as Alamisa, brought to him for treatment at Gombiyel in Shelleng Local Government Area of the state.

    Buba who was paraded before newsmen by the police on Thursday, March 23, 2023 accused a demon of slaughtering the deceased.

    He stated that the deceased, who was suffering from mental illness and epilepsy, was brought to him by his elder brother, Yahaya Musa of Kambillam in company of other family members for treatment.

    Buba said he earlier tested the deceased and found out that he was mentally derailed, but that he had no chickens at that time to slaughter to offer sacrifice for the man to get well.

    “I usually slaughter chickens for sacrifice to a blood demon in order to prevent it from tourching anybody. Failure to make sacrifice to the demon, a patient cannot get well.” Buba said

    He went on to state that while performing some rituals with a robe at his backyard, the demon descended in a whirlwind with knives tied on his leg and slit the throat of the patient.

    “I saw the demon in the whirlwind but before I could reach where the patient is lying down to protect him, the demon over took me and slaughtered him. Initially, the demon had warned me and demanded that I should slaughter chickens and offer sacrifice of blood. I was waiting for market day to buy the chickens for sacrifice as demanded,” he said

    He added that the family members of the deceased did not see the demon while coming down to the scene to kill Alamisa, saying that he was the only one who sighted it and rushed in to prevent it but to no avail.

    According to him, he normally communicates with the demon which he inherited from his grandmother when asleep in the night in Koma Damti dialect in Jada LGA, saying that he has been using it to treat people in order to earn a living.

    On his part, an elder brother of the deceased, Yahaya Musa, blamed the native doctor for murdering his brother, saying that he was the one who slaughtered his brother and removed his throat.

    Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the state police command, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, said that the suspect was apprehended in connection to the crime and is being investigated.

    The Lagos State Ministry of Justice is set to press 16 charges of manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm against Oluwaseun Osibanjo, the driver of the BRT bus that collided with a moving train in Lagos.

    The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of six Lagos State Government staff and passengers of the train, while 96 others were injured to varying degrees.

    The collision occurred on March 9th-2023, when a staff bus collided with a train at the PWD railway crossing in Ikeja and the train dragged the bus and its passengers along the tracks until it came to a halt at Sogunle, a suburb of Ikeja.

    In a statement released on Friday 24th-March-2023 by the Director of Public Affairs in the ministry, Grace Alo, the BRT driver is faced with 16-count charges.

    “Upon the receipt and review of the case file by the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), a prima facie case of manslaughter and grievous bodily harm were disclosed against the driver of the Staff bus.

    “Accordingly, he is to be charged with 6 counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of grievous bodily harm.

    “Both offences are contrary to Sections 224 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” the statement read.

    According to the statement, charges will be promptly filed against the driver by the Office of the DPP. Nevertheless, his appearance before the Ikeja High Court for trial will be postponed until he has completely recovered from the severe injuries sustained during the accident.

    Tinubu Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plots To Truncate His Swearing-In

    President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has raised the alarm over plots by some aggrieved partisans to truncate the transition process, particularly his expected swearing-in on 29th-May-2023.

    Tinubu in a statement by his Director, Public Affairs and Minister of State Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo SAN also warned the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and that of the Labour Party LP, Mr Peter Obi against taking to the streets while also pursuing their cases in court.

    In the statement issued Saturday in Abuja, the President-elect noted that those who have taken to the streets protesting against his mandate are fixated on having an Interim National Government ING.

    Part of the statement reads:

    “We have watched with great concern the condemnable activities of some persons and groups who are desirous of truncating our democracy.

    “For reasons best known to them, these persons have remained embittered that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was declared winner of the 2023 General Elections. Repeatedly, but unfortunately, these misguided individuals have called for either the cancellation of the results or that the President-elect should not be inaugurated on the 29th of May, 2023.

    “We wish to reiterate and emphasise that these positions are not in tandem with our constitutional provisions or our electoral laws. We would have taken these as mere wishful thinking, however, because of their implications for national security and public order, we have therefore considered it necessary, if not expedient, to call them to order.

    “We are aware of the intentions of those engaged in these treasonable and subversive acts. We also know those involved in the many plots being contrived to undermine the transition in particular and democracy in general. They are fixated on an Interim Government. They have done it in this country before and it threw the country into avoidable crises for many years and they want to do it again. They are bent on delegitimizing the new government. Some have made treasonable insinuations and openly called for military take-over. It is for these reasons that they are desperate to incite the people against the incoming Government.

    “It is perplexing to see that those contesting the results want to be in the courts and on the streets at the same time. However, if their intention is to truncate the inauguration of the President-elect and Vice-President-elect, they should immediately bury the thought. It is gratifying to note that the President has set in motion steps for the actualisation of the swearing-in ceremonies. In this regard, the Presidential Transition Council has remained focused and committed to its Terms of Reference in respect of organizing a hitch-free handover”.

    The statement noted that on many occasions after the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the election, his public speeches and utterances have centred on reconciliation, forgiveness and a greater vision for Nigeria.

    It added that the President-elect knows those who are sponsoring violent protests against his mandate as well as their sponsors from within and outside Nigeria and shall be working closely with the security agencies to apprehend them and bring them to book

    “He has pledged fairness as the basis for his present and future engagements. He has unequivocally stated that he would not accord favour to those that supported him, and neither would he mistreat those who did not vote for him. This is statesmanly and patri*tic. We all watched the President-elect as Governor of Lagos for eight years. He never undermined any person or tribe. He championed people-oriented policies. It is common knowledge that he is a welfarist and a pacifist. This is even more so that millions of citizens have spoken through the ballot box in his favour.

    “By being declared winners, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima are legally entitled to be inaugurated into office as provided for by law and as we have practised since 1999, whilst those who feel otherwise have the right to seek legal redress in court. Why should their situation be different from what we have practised since 1999?

    “Those who are dissatisfied with the declaration must conduct themselves within the ambits of the law. Nigeria is not a lawless country and should not be portrayed as such no matter the frustrations as presently being exhibited by some bad losers.

    “Those who are stoking the embers of hate, division and falsehoods as well as peddling misleading narratives through some compromised media outlets should detract from such. It amounts to campaigning after elections. Hate speeches, fake news and propaganda at a time like this are needless because Nigerians have already made their choice. Those who are bent on scuttling the process will ignite the fire of destruction and run away. But they should not even start.

    “We simply wish that peace reigns in the country. It does not make sense that some persons who should know better are encouraging violence and are so determined to achieve that.

    “We know these persons and their sponsors from within and outside Nigeria and we shall be working closely with the security agencies to apprehend them and bring them to book. Our concern is that everyday Nigerians who are unaware of the evil intentions of these persons should not be used as cannon fodders. Enough is enough. Their continuous determination to dare us should cease forthwith. We are not lacking in capabilities and capacities. Our silence should not be taken for cowardice. We should come together for the peace of our beloved country. It is better”, Keyamo added.

    The Labour Party presidential candidate said videos of the women going naked to protest is “sad” and “heartbreaking”.

    He wrote: “I just came across a sad, heartbreaking video where Nasarawa women staged a topless protest as a means of registering their displeasure with the election results.

    “The purpose of election is for citizens to participate in democratic governance through the representatives they elect. A grievous injustice occurs when citizens are denied the opportunity to vote in a free, fair and credible process or their mandate is stolen from them.

    “Our women who should be honoured and respected, and their rights protected, have been degraded and left to seek justice the only way they can trust by calling on their creator.

    NAICOM: Insurance Industry’s Assets Increased To N2.32tn As Gross Premium Income Hits N726.2bn In Q4

    The total Assets of the insurance industry stood at N2.32 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2022, representing a 2.4 per cent, expansion quarter-on-quarter and 4.4 per cent year-on-year, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) disclosed yesterday.
    Also Gross Premium Income (GPI) totalling about N726.2 billion was generated by the sector in the review period.
    In addition, insurance claims reported during the quarter stood at N318.2billion, representing a 31.2 per cent quarter-on-quarter growth, while net claims paid amounted to N244.3 billion. This represented a growth of about 17.9 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

    This was contained in Bulletin of the Insurance Market Performance for the period under review, which was made available to news men.
    The report noted that total assets was however relatively at a lower momentum compared to the prior period when the progression rate was recorded at about nine per cent year-on-year due to the wave of recapitalisation drive recorded in that period.

    However, the report stated that, the “outlook of the market growth in terms of assets remained positive, with the increasing measures of market deepening and development, recapitalisation drive still ongoing, regulatory insurance laws and provisions enshrined in the insurance bill, being reviewed and, digitalisation of the supervisory wide processes would lead to the realisation of the vast potential in the insurance industry, ” the commission stated.

    The GPI performance represented a growth of about 36.3 per cent quarter-on-quarter and about 18 per cent year-on-year.
    The improvement in the market indices was attributable to the growing awareness and market expansion as well as consumer’s confidence.

    Data on the non-life segment showed that motor insurance led with regards to claims settlement vis-a-vis gross claims reported at about 92.3 per cent signifying a nine points improvement as against its prior position.

    Fire insurance was the least with about 46.3 per cent, and the only class below average proportion.
    Others included General Accident Insurance (80.7 per cent), Oil Gas (51.6 per cent), and Marine and Aviation (74.4 per cent),
    This was relatively at a lower momentum compared to the prior period when the progression rate was recorded at about nine per cent (YoY), attributable to the wave of recapitalization drive recorded in that period.

    The report added that there was continuous improvement in retention propensity, increased market size and industry profitability, compared to the preceding quarter.
    The results were particularly remarkable given the real growth 3.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the same period.
    The positive data was attributed to the consistent regulatory measures being carried out by the commission in recent times which had restored some measure of professionalism in insurance practice thus, boosting public confidence.

    Non-Life business maintained its dominance, contributing about 57.4 per cent to GPI relative to the share of the Life business which stood at 42.6 per cent, similar to the preceding quarter.
    According to the market update, the proportional significance of Life in the industry sustained a positive course in recent times reflective of the consumer’s confidence and awareness.

    Further analysis of the Non-Life segment of the insurance market showed that oil and gas business sustained its market share dominance at 30.25 per cent, representing an increase of 2.4 per cent compared to Q3.
    Fire insurance accounted for 22.2 per cent maintaining same pattern of contribution to the gross premium pool of the market while Motor Insurance accounted for 14.9 per cent.
    Other contributors to GPI in Q4 include Marine & Aviation 12.2 per cent, General Accident 11.1 per cent and Miscellaneous 9.5 per cent.

    However, Life business was driven by Individual Life portfolio which accounted for 38.6 per cent even as its relative contribution fell by about 2.6 per cent compared to Q3 which recorded 41.6 per cent.

    Group life contributed 34.5 per cent per cent to GPI while Annuity business contributed 26.9 per cent during the period under review.
    The commission however pointed out that amid operational challenges confronted in domestic and global economies, the industry continues to post inspiring numbers in premium retention capacity reflective of the market resilience and increasing capacity.
    In the period under review, industry wide average retention ratio stood at about 71.3 per cent although, slightly a point lower than it held in the previous quarter and four points lower in comparison to same period year on year.

    Persistently, the Life business retained about 93.3 per cent compared to 93.8 per cent in the preceding.
    In the Non-Life segment which also took a similar pattern, Motor Insurance continued its lead as the highest retaining portfolio with a retention ratio of about 93.5 per cent.
    Similarly, oil and gas recorded the least business retention at 35.9 per cent.
    According to NAICOM, “The oil and gas portfolio lamentably remained a challenging angle in the market owing to its nature of enormous capital and professional requirements.

    “Consequently, the retention performance in the current period sustained its prior position when compared to the third quarter as evidenced by the overall Non-Life business ratio of 55.0 per cent, slipping from about 57 per cent held in the prior period.”

    The report added, “Statistics of the insurance market performance for the fourth quarter 2022 revealed consistent growth in terms of premium generation, quality improvements in essential indicators including claims settlement and profitability.
    “It is obvious that the market could be ruled as sound and stable whilst, the stance of the market deepening remains optimistic in spite of operational and macro-economic challenges.”

    Naira Scarcity: NECA Urges NLC To Shelve Planned Strike Action

    The Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) yesterday 23rd-March-2023 advised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to shelve its planned strike against the prevailing naira scarcity in order to avoid dragging the economy into a deeper crisis.
    The Director General of NECA, Mr. Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, gave this warning yesterday, in a press statement titled, “Nigeria Labour Congress Nationwide Planned Strike: NECA Calls for Caution, Urges Social Dialogue.”

    However, in a bid to stave off an impending protest by the NLC against the central bank, some officials of the apex bank, including its deputy governors, yesterday met with the leadership of the congress in Abuja.

    Speaking further, Oyerinde cautioned that embarking on the planned strike at this time would be counter-productive.
    Oyerinde said: “While we had expressed our deep concern as regards the mismanaged and dreadful implementation of the naira redesign policy, and in fact, some other policies of the Central Bank of Nigeria, it is our strong believe that the planned strike by the NLC could further drag the economy into a deeper hole, leading to rapid business closures, job losses and other socio-economic challenges.

    “While we affirm emphatically our displeasure with government’s loud silence and seeming inactivity in resolving the self-inflicted quagmire, the planned strike, at this time, could be counter-productive.

    “We, hereby, urge the maximum use of the instrumentality of social dialogue in resolving all issues associated with industrial and social-economic disputes.
    “Actions by government and indeed social partners that could compromise the fragile economic state of the nation should be avoided. We urge the CBN and indeed, the federal government to immediately address the genuine concern of Nigerians in view of the ongoing socio-economic difficulties.”
    He added that it was without a doubt that the cash crunch had affected businesses, individuals and households terribly while economic experts and analysts had stated that the loss in economic terms could be over N20 trillion as a result of loss of productive hours in bank halls and petrol stations, shut-down of businesses due to low patronage, inability of employees to transit to work, challenges faced by households in meeting basic needs and the general distortion in general supply chain.

    Meanwhile, officials of the CBN yesterday met with the leadership of the NLC in Abuja.
    THISDAY learnt from sources at the Labour House that the meeting held at the NLC’s headquarters saw the CBN delegation explaining the government’s financial policy, especially the naira redesign that resulted in cash crunch.
    The source said the CBN delegation led by its Deputy Governors – Mr. Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi and Dr. Kingsley Obiora – pleaded for the understanding of organised labour on the lingering cash squeeze.

    “The CBN team pleaded with the NLC not to embark on the protest, assuring that it is doing everything to restore normalcy in the currency supply chain,” he said.
    The NLC had on Wednesday directed all workers to picket all the offices of the central bank nationwide starting from next week, over current cash crunch in the country.

    NLC President, Joe Ajaero, who gave the directive while addressing journalists, had said the directive became imperative following the expiration of a one-week ultimatum given to the apex bank to make cash available to Nigerians.
    He said workers decided to take their destiny in their hands, adding that the mobilisation had already commenced.

    Ondo Police Command Arrests Pastor For Alleged Raping And Killing Of Nursing Mother Inside Church In Ondo

    The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old pastor, Kayode Salami, who allegedly raped and killed a nursing mother inside his church. 

    It was gathered that the deceased, Adejoke Oloje, came to the Oke-Irapada C&S Church, with her cousin, one Aderonke to worship for the first time.

    It was further learnt that the deceased, a nursing mother, left home with her 11 months old baby in January, this year, to stay in the church where she met her untimely death.

    Speaking with state owned newspaper, The Hope Metro, the mother of the deceased, Mrs. Deborah said Adejoke came to her in Idanre for a visit and suddenly left the house without any notice.

    “I called her line to ask about her whereabouts, but she didn’t pick her calls. So, one day,  some people told me they saw her in Alade with her cousin, Aderonke. I collected Aderonke’s phone number from their grandmother and I called her, but she said Adejoke was staying in the church, not her place,” she narrated.

    “I called my daughter’s phone number and she picked it. I asked  for the description of where she was staying and she obliged me. I went to the church and eventually found her. She complained about foodstuffs and I promised to bring some for her the following day. I also pleaded with her to leave the place, but she declined and I left.

    “The next day, when I got to the church around past 5pm, I heard her child crying profusely. So, I moved close to see what happened. I met the door closed. So, I forced it open. To my utmost dismay, I found my daughter on the floor, with her pant already removed down her legs and I shouted for help.”

    The victim’s mother said they immediately took her to the hospital where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

    She said the case was immediately reported at the police station in Idanre and the policemen swung into action to apprehend the pastor.

    “When the pastor was arrested, we noticed that his trouser was torn under and he wasn’t wearing any underwear. It is a painful story  and a sad moment for our family. She was with an 11-month-old child before she met her untimely death. The culprit must not go unpunished,” she pleaded.

    On his part, pastor Salami denied raping and killing the woman. 

    “I knew Adejoke through her sister, Aderonke. They came to my church to worship and they went home. After that day, Adejoke came back on her own to seek accommodation in the church, pending when she would get a place to stay,” he said. 

    “I gave her one room out of the two rooms in the church. I did not ask her what happened between her and her sister, Aderonke. I gave her Cam Gas we use in the church to cook.

    “There is only one door linking my room and the room given to her to stay. So, I used to pass through her room. And I always inform her whenever I was going out or coming in.

    “We did vigil together in the church and the next morning, I saw her before going to work, because I am a welder. She later came to my place of work to charge her phone around 2pm and came to collect it around 4 pm.

    “I make use of the room when I have programmes in the church. My family and I rented an apartment outside. I did not rape her and I can’t explain how she died.”

    Chinese Startup Invents Long Distance Kissing Machine To Combat Loneliness

    A Chinese start-up has invented a long-distance kissing machine to battle loneliness among couples in long-distance relationships. 

    The device called MUA is named after the sound people commonly make when blowing a kiss. 

    It transmits users’ kiss data collected through motion sensors hidden in silicon lips, which simultaneously move when replaying kisses received. 

    MUA also captures and replays sound and warms up slightly during kissing, making the experience more authentic, said Beijing-based Siweifushe. 

    Users can even download kissing data submitted via an accompanying app by other users.

    The invention was inspired by lockdown isolation when people were prevented from living their homes in China. 

    “I was in a relationship back then, but I couldn’t meet my girlfriend due to lockdowns,” said inventor Zhao Jianbo. 

    Then a student at the Beijing Film Academy, he focused his graduate project on the lack of physical intimacy in video calls. He later set up Siweifushe which released MUA, its first product, on 22 January. The device is priced at 260 yuan ($38). 

    In the two weeks after its release, the firm sold over 3,000 kissing machines and received about 20,000 orders, he said. 

    The MUA resembles a mobile stand with colourless pursed lips protruding from the front. To use it, lovers must download an app on to their smartphones and pair their kissing machines. When they kiss the device, it kisses back. 

    The device is available in several colours with the same unis*x lips. 

    MUA is not the first remote kissing device. Researchers at Tokyo’s University of Electro-Communications invented a “kiss transmission machine” in 2011, and Malaysia’s Imagineering Institute made a similar gadget called the “Kissinger” in 2016.

    Appeal Court To Decides Adeleke, Oyetola’s Fate On Friday

    The Court of Appeal in Abuja will on Friday 24th-March-2023 give its decision on the authentic winner of last year’s governorship election in Osun State.

    A three-member panel of the court had on Monday March 13th-2023, reserved its judgment in the appeal filed by Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, against his ordered removal from office on grounds that he did not score majority of valid votes cast at the poll.

    Justice M.F. Shuaibu had, at the last sitting, announced that they have reserved judgment to a date that would be communicated to parties shortly after lawyers adopted and argued their briefs of argument for and against the suit.

    However, 10 days after, Infinity Loaded gathered that the court had reached the parties in the case, informing them that judgment would be delivered on Friday, March 24, 2023.

    While Adeleke, represented by Chief Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), had at the hearing adduced reasons why the appellate court should set aside the judgment of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that nullified his victory in last year’s poll for erring in law, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who represented the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Gboyega Oyetola, argued otherwise.

    At the end of arguments however, Justice Shuaibu announced before the court that judgment would be delivered on a date that would be communicated to the parties.

    While Adeleke is the appellant in the appeal: marked CA/AK/EPT/GOV/01/2023, Oyetola, APC, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are the first to fourth respondents respectively.

    Adeleke had, on February 9th, appealed the judgment of the Osun State Governorship Tribunal which nullified his election.

    The tribunal had ruled in favour of Oyetola. While delivering the judgment, two out of the three-member panel of the tribunal held that Oyetola proved that there was over-voting in some of the polling units.

    The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Tertsea Kume, who read the majority judgment, disclosed that the excess votes were deducted following which Oyetola won the election.

    According to Justice Kume, having deducted the over-voting figure, Oyetola scored 314,921, while Ademola polled 290,266 votes.

    Adeleke in the 31 grounds of appeal prayed the court for “an order setting aside the whole decision of the tribunal”.

    The governor equally sought “an order striking out the petition for want of competence and jurisdiction or in the alternative, an order dismissing the petition on the merit”.

    “The tribunal, in its judgment, erred in law and displayed bias against the appellant when it made reference to the appellant’s dance at his inauguration as governor of Osun State which was never an issue before the lower tribunal,” Adeleke noted.

    “By referring to the appellant’s personal eccentricity for dancing, the lower tribunal derided and mocked him in a manner suggesting that it was biased against him.

    “The appearance of bias manifests in the reference to the appellant’s proclivity for dancing and particularly the Buga song, has rendered the decision of the lower Tribunal a nullity.”

    Justice Kume had, while delivering the judgment, said: “The second respondent cannot ‘go lo lo lo lo’ and ‘buga won’ as the duly elected governor of Osun State,” the governor said.

    “The tribunal in its judgment erred in law in returning the 1st respondent as the duly elected candidate without due regard to the enormity of the voters in the units where the results were cancelled for over-voting,” he said.

    A United Kingdom court has convicted a former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice, on charges of organ trafficking.

    Also convicted are Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia; and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, who was said to have facilitated the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation.

    Justice Jeremy Johnson handed down a guilty verdict on the defendants Thursday  23rd-March-2023 in London at the end of a six-week trial.

    The Metropolitan Police had last year arrested Ekweremadu and his wife for luring a young man from Nigeria to the UK for the propose of organ harvesting.

    Although, they pleaded not guilty to the charge, the court however, admitted only Beatrice to bail, while the serving senator from Enugu State was kept in custody throughout the duration of the trial.

    Meanwhile, the court will on a later date, pass sentence on the defendants.

    CBN Made Critical Mistakes That Doomed Its Currency Redesign

    When we go down memory lane, we will recall  that Nigeria has successfully introduced new banknotes on about 10 occasions since independence in 1960. So why has the latest attempt been so controversial and traumatic? And what measures need to be taken to avoid a future debacle?

    Nigeria’s central bank announced the introduction of new banknotes last November, with the changeover to new notes scheduled for mid-December.

    The rollout of the policy disintegrated into chaos, amid mounting anger among ordinary Nigerians.

    The rollout of the currency change was disastrous. The fallout included:

    • Severe shortages of the new banknotes.
    • Precipitous declines in business transactions (especially in the informal sector).
    • Long queues at bank premises and overcrowded banking halls
    • Attacks on bank staff and destruction of bank property, including ATMs that failed to dispense cash.

    The policy also led to lawsuits by some state governors against the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government.

    I have identified five factors that marred the redesign policy, most of which could have been avoided by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

    Litany of errors

    Cost-benefit: An egregious error committed by the central bank was its violation of the principle of cost-benefit analysis. This is a simple rule in economics that implores policy makers to undertake an initiative only when the benefits exceed the costs. One should ask: What were the benefits of introducing the policy? What were the potential costs at the time of implementation?

    The central bank justified the redesign policy as follows: to rein in counterfeiting, promote a cashless economy by limiting the amount of the new banknotes that can be withdrawn, reduce the large quantity of dirty notes circulating in the economy, discourage hoarding, curb crimes like kidnapping and terrorism, and head off illicit financial transactions.

    It also saw the policy as a way of addressing the huge amount of currency outside the formal financial sector; 85% of banknotes circulate outside the banking system, largely because of hoarding and illicit financial transactions.

    And the cost? If indeed the central bank considered the cost, it obviously underestimated it. How would anyone ignore the large-scale disruptions in the economy and loss of productivity that the policy caused, not to speak of the stress and anxiety inflicted on Nigerians?

    Communication: Of all the pitfalls that doomed the currency redesign policy, at least as conceived originally, the lack of effective communication about the overarching goals and modus operandi of the exercise was the most devastating.

    Nigeria’s central bank threw a basic element of strategic planning and communication to the winds when it failed woefully to communicate and educate the public about expectations, prior to launching the policy. According to strategic planners, a major policy initiative that is not well communicated, from the top of the strategy planning pyramid to the bottom, is bound to fail.

    The central bank should have sought the buy-in of major stakeholders, especially the National Economic Council and the National Assembly. The central bank would have had a better chance of avoiding the ferocious push-back it got.

    The central bank finally began rolling out a communication plan by late December 2022. But this was too little too late. By then Nigerians had already characterised the policy as decidedly punitive. The narrative that had gained ground was that the change was designed to curtail the ability of politicians to buy votes during the 2023 elections.

    This inevitably raised the question of why millions of Nigerians should suffer because of politicians?

    The central bank’s mishandling of communication was also manifested in the fact that it failed to issue policy guidelines to commercial banks and the public days after the Supreme Court nullified the bank’s earlier deadline. This has exacerbated the confusion associated with the policy, as merchants and businesses continue to reject the old notes, despite the court’s rulings.

    Inappropriate timeframe: The timeframe for implementation was unrealistic and impracticable. By setting a very short timeframe for phasing out the old notes, the Central Bank of Nigeria appeared to have adopted textbook assumptions about how the Nigerian banking system works.

    Anyone who has been to a typical commercial bank in Nigeria would know it would have been impossible for the banks to undertake the monumental task of collecting old notes and dispensing the new ones within the one-and-a-half month window originally allowed by the central bank. Overcrowding, chaos, excruciatingly slow service and unnecessary bureaucratic red tape are quite common during normal banking hours. It is not uncommon to observe people with “connection” circumvent queues and obtain preferential access to bank staff. Although Nigerian banks pride themselves as being digitised, a lot of paper-pushing still goes on within the banking system.

    The central bank should have considered this fact and allowed for a longer timeframe for implementation.

    There was also no persuasive rationale for the rushed implementation of the policy. Neither was the central bank able to explain why the old and new notes could not coexist, a measure the Supreme Court has now mandated the bank to implement.

    Conflicting goals and lack of prioritisation: Policy targeting is a major precondition for success. The focus on one unambiguous objective in past redesign policies enabled the central bank to conduct a seamless and less dramatic exercise.

    The current redesign policy had too many goals, and it was unclear which one was the target goal.

    Identifying target goals enables policy makers to select appropriate instruments for achieving those goals. But when there are too many goals, the danger is that an instrument designed for one goal may undermine another goal.

    For instance, the goal of reining in money laundering and illicit financial transactions meant that the Central Bank of Nigeria needed to deliberately restrict access to the new banknotes. But this inflicted unintended hardships on innocent Nigerians who simply wanted to access their hard-earned money.

    The central bank should have focused on one major goal. If the goal was to phase out old notes, as the bank is statutorily mandated to do, then the old and new notes could have circulated alongside each other until the old notes were phased out.

    A casual announcement that new notes would be circulating from a given date would have been all that was needed. People would not have panicked and rushed to the banks to withdraw money.

    Economic headwinds: It is very difficult to implement a major policy initiative that negatively affects people during a period of macroeconomic instability. The central bank policy came at a bad time. Nigeria’s economy is in a shambles, with a 22% inflation rate, 33% unemployment rate – 43% among young Nigerians – and a growth rate of 3%.

    These economic challenges have been compounded by a 17.5% interest rate, steep declines in the value of the Naira, and widespread poverty.

    Nigerians’ tolerance for economic shocks was already at its limit when the redesign policy was launched. The policy and the confusion that accompanied it tipped them over the edge.

    The challenge of credibility

    The central bank needs to reestablish its credibility as the “people’s bank,” to reverse a self-inflicted image of an organisation that’s partisan.

    The bank has a fiduciary responsibility of catering to the interests of its main “shareholder,” the Nigerian people. But the perception is that the bank lacks independence. To effectively discharge its statutory duties, the Central Bank of Nigeria should initiate a process of re-asserting its independence and regaining the people’s trust and confidence.

    The Head of Engineering, OnePipe, Victor Irechukwu, has called on the federal government to tackle cases of online fraud in order to make epayments more acceptable to all.

    Irechukwu, in a statement, said the commonly reported theme has been a situation where people’s debit cards are used to make deposits on a gambling website without their knowledge.

    According to him, “At other times, you are shown a debit alert by someone who wants to purchase goods or services from you, but only later realise they showed you what has now been termed ‘fake alerts’. By this time, your goods, for instance, would have been long gone.

    “In recent months, social media has been awash with reports of money literally growing wings and leaving some people’s accounts to those of other people without authorisation. Many of these cases have gone viral on social media, causing embarrassment for the banks involved – The issues are either quietly – or corrected with public acknowledgement. But not all are resolved.

    “As much as the country and even individuals would like to go cashless, these bad experiences leave a sour taste in the mouth, and they have continued to rain on the parade as Nigeria marches towards a cashless economy. It must be stressed that a cashless economy does not mean theft of money will stop, what it does is to change how thieves go about it. But more importantly, it also doesn’t mean thefts must occur.”

    He said in the electronic world, an article on The Balance Money, had described hackers as the bank robbers and muggers.

    He quoted the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS), as saying that growth in the use of electronic channels, specifically mobile devices has also enticed fraudsters into focusing their efforts on these electronic channels.

    “NIBSS also showed that fraud attempts via mobile channel saw a 330 per cent increase year-on-year (YoY) between 2019 and 2020, while attempts via web and POS channels saw a 173 per cent and 215 per cent increase YoY. In those nine months, 96 per cent of the attacks were successful and there were 46,126 of such attacks.

    “This trend is expected to continue as Nigeria further grows financial inclusion and customers become increasingly dependent on electronic channels for their day-to-day transactions,” NIBSS said.

    Ojuoko whose group partnered the BMW Club Nigeria to deliver the Xmas Auto Fest on December 18, 2022, in Victoria Island, Lagos said the industry has a lot to gain from the growth of Motorsports and the fusion of ideas through its different promoters.

    “I think that the event that we pulled off with the BMW Club Nigeria was the biggest Motorsport event in the country last year and that easily communicates the much the industry can achieve when we come together.

    “For now, we have very little window for professionalism in the sport in Nigeria and I think, as such most of the players have day jobs that keep them occupied. It means that most of the needle-moving activities for the sports will be better achieved as a group where everyone comes on board to work as a team,” he said.

    Ojuoko also added that pockets of other groups can also come on board to showcase their distinct purposes during those events, like racing clubs, vintage cars, and fans of retro-fitted vehicles.

    “You will be so amazed how many of these different sub-clubs are growing across the country. I think racing clubs because of their visibility, whenever they have activities, seem to be the most popular groups. But a bunch of other cars enthusiast that expresses their passion for the industry in various other forms are also growing and only when a common platform Is created that you can see them.”

    The Xmas Auto Fest, a third in the partnership arrangement between Work and Playgroup and BMW featured drag races and drifting from some of the most popular athletes across the country.

    “We had people who travelled in from Abuja, Zaria, Port Harcourt, Kebbi and other parts of the country. The fraternity events like these afford us, help us to deepen the engagement between different Motorsports communities around the country and chart ways to be able to move the sport forward,” he added.

    Work and Play is arguably Nigeria’s biggest Motorsport community, with over five events since its inauguration on May 27, 2018, and partnering several other events across the country.

    Former Arsenal and Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from professional football, aged 34.

    The former Germany international had been playing for Turkish top-flight side Istanbul Basaksehir since joining in the summer but has only made eight appearances for the club following injury problems.

    Back issues have largely caused the playmaker to feature in only 187 minutes of football this term having moved from Fenerbahce following 18 months at the club.

    Ozil revealed the news on Instagram in a statement reading:

     ‘Hello everyone, After thoughtful consideration, l’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football.

    ‘I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity.

    ‘But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it’s become more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football.’

    Ozil left the Gunners in January 2021 having been frozen out by current boss Mikel Arteta, but in a statement, he showed no ill feeling towards his former club where he won four FA Cups after signing for £42.5million from Real Madrid to much fanfare in 2013.

    ‘It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions,’ he added.

    ‘I want to thank my clubs – Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahce, Basaksehir and the coaches who supported me, plus team-mates who have become friends.

    ‘Special thanks must go to my family members and my closest friends. They have been a part of my journey from day one and have given me so much love and support, through the good times and the bad.

    Bola Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated Obi and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25, 2023 presidential poll.

    Speaking during a media chat on Wednesday, March 22-2023, the Rivers governor said there was no agreement in place for him to work for Obi as his main goal was to have a southerner become president.

    “I never told Rivers state people to vote for a candidate, I told them to vote for the unity of Nigeria. I take exception to Peter Obi’s comment that I came out against him. People are not being sincere, people are not being appreciative,” he said.

    “In 2019, ask Peter Obi, I was part of the team that chose Peter Obi to be the vice-presidential candidate of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. When we met at Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s house, he said these are the names and we chose Peter Obi.
    “While we were at (Bukola) Saraki’s house in the night, I was fought by people like Ike Ekweremadu and my own friend, people like the governor of Ebonyi state, people were like why must I be the one to choose Peter Obi, why must I choose for the candidates?

    “Did he come out to say Governor Wike was the one who supported me to be the vice-presidential candidate?

    “When he said I came out against him, it is unfortunate because nobody has ever heard me during my campaigns saying don’t vote for Peter Obi, I never said so.     Wike said the G5 governors of the PDP were committed to ensuring a southern candidate was elected as president.

    “I can tell you not just G5 governors, the Integrity Group met and said they are all for a southern president but not for the northern president again and that power has to shift,” he added.

    “There was never a time that we said it must be who or it must be this but however, we formulated strategies that must make a southern president emerge and those strategies were carried out and results were achieved.”

    Abia State Governor-elect, Alex Otti of the Labour Party, has taken to twitter to react after he was announced winner of the governorship election in the state.

    After days of stalling, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced Otti winner of the 18 March Governorship election in Abia State on Wednesday, March 22.

    Reacting to his victory via his official Twitter account, Otti pledged to serve Abians judiciously for the next four years. 

    He wrote: “See what the Lord has done.”

    He added in another tweet: “With deep humility and a profound sense of responsibility, I wholeheartedly accept your mandate to be your chief servant for the next 4 years.”

    Otti got 175,467 votes, while his closest rival, Ahiwe, got 88,529, according to INEC.

    Otti’s victory led to jubilation across the streets of Umuahia and other parts of the state.

     The Minister stated this at the seminar by Defence Correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday, March 22-2023.

    Represented by his media aide, Horatius Egua, the Minister said the problems confronting the oil and gas industry stemmed from years of neglect by past administrations. 

    “The oil and gas industry is the most complex sector in this country. The more you look, the less you see.  In the last 12 months, the order by the president to end oil theft in the country is beginning to yield results. Before then our production went down to 900, 000 barrels per day but today it is gradually picking up and oscillating between 1.5 and 1.6 million barrels per day.

    Apart from stealing, past governments did not invest in infrastructure in the oil and gas sector for a very long time. You find pipeline rupturing; we could not get what we wanted but this administration has done that. Also, our refineries are not working despite the millions of naira spent on them.

    The president directed that the refineries must work and as it is the Porth Harcourt refinery is at 65-70 percent. hopefully before the end of the second quarter of the year. I believe something will come out of that refinery.”

    Some North Korean bodyguards face the prospect of being killed for allowing leader Kim Jong-un to go out with stained clothes.

    The dictator was inspecting a missile launch last week when propaganda pictures captured a stain on his cloth.

    His jacket appeared to be covered in white marks, and reports came out in North Korea that Kim’s staff will be punished for failing to ‘protect his dignity.’

    A blogger of North Korean news, Michael Madden said those responsible for the stain face demotions or hard labour but even execution could not be ruled out.

    ‘My initial reaction was OMFG,’ he said. ‘Personnel who have irritated the supreme leader are usually punished with demotions, hardship assignments or labour education.

    ‘It is unlikely that anyone will get shot over something like this – unless the leader is feeling particularly mercurial.

    ‘But if he got angry about this then a few people will probably get sent to a construction site or a farm for a month or two to think about this minor transgression.’

    He added: ‘It is not unheard of to be sent away for execution.

    ‘There are accounts of the leader’s father, Kim Jong-il, having bodyguards and members of his personal staff sent to prisons and in one case to the firing squad for very minor offenses.

    ‘One unconfirmed story is that a member of his personal staff sat at his desk and smoked one of his cigarettes. Kim Jong-il discovered this and had the man shot.’

    Madden, who runs the North Korea Leadership Watch website, said the guards might have to write a letter of apology to reduce their punishment.

    But he said it was also possible that Kim lets it slide ‘since he is far less prone to mood swings and problems with emotional regulation than his father’.

    The federal government has announced that a total of 3,834,244 cyber-attacks were made against Nigeria during the last governorship and state house of assembly elections.

    According to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the attacks originated from both within and outside Nigeria.

    Pantami said 1.05m attacks were recorded a day to the governorship and state houses of assembly while 1.5m attacks were recorded on the election day.

    327,718 attacks were recorded on Sunday, March 19 while 977,783 attacks were launched on the country’s IT infrastructure on Monday, March 20.

    During election period, series of hacking attempts that were recorded and they include “Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), email and Internet Protocol Spoofing (IPS) attacks, SSH Login Attempts, Brute force Injection attempts, Path Traversal, Detection Evasion, and Forceful Browsing.”

    The statement signed released by Pantami’s technical aide, Dr Femi Adeluyi, read; 

    “It is interesting to note that the activities of cyberthreat actors on the Nigerian cyberspace during the Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections are much lower than those during the Presidential and National Assembly elections. This is neither surprising nor unexpected as, Nigeria being Africa’s largest democracy, the Presidential and National Assembly elections are bound to attract much attention of everyone, including cyberthreat actors, than during the Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections. Furthermore, the Honourable Minister is confident that the implementation of some recommendations as well as measures taken to fortify our cyber defence mechanisms might have helped in this”

    The Minister who revealed that the attacks were neutralised by agencies under his ministry, added that the ministry had earlier developed and implemented plans to enhance the resilience of critical digital infrastructure against cyber threats in the country.

    Pantami also said the country had designed procedures and used superior technologies to prevent, detect, and respond to cyber-attacks, as well as developed the ability to quickly recover from any damage that is done when attacks occur.

    Boxer Punches His Brother-in-law To Death In Edo State

    A boxer identified as Scott Eguabor, is on the run after he allegedly punched his brother-in-law, Sunday Okoro to death, in Benin City, Edo State.

    It was gathered that Sunday was trying to resolve a marital crisis between the boxer and his wife, the deceased’s immediate younger sister.

    According to Nigerian Tribune, the incident occurred March 19, 2023, at Erie Street, off Sokponba Road, Benin City, one week after the boxer allegedly assaulted a Pastor following a disagreement over security levy.

    Eguabor, a Coach in charge of Boxing in Edo State Ministry of Sports Council and Head of the State Security Network in Erie and its environs, allegedly fled his home after committing the crime, barely one month after the victim’s wife gave birth. 

    Okoro, a father of three children, was said to have responded to an invitation by his younger sister, who is a renowned Judoka in the same Sports Ministry with her husband, to settle a quarrel in their house. 

    An eyewitness,  Osahon Okoro-Obaraye, told the publication that Eguabor inflicted severe injuries on Okoro’s eyes and nose.

    According to him, Sunday wept bitterly over the attack before he proceeded to Esigie Police Division where he formally made the complaint and was advised by a policeman on duty to go and treat the injury. 

    The eyewitness added that in the heat of his ordeal, Mr. Sunday, who is believed to be in his early 30’s, and bleeding severely trekked to his in-law’s house in First Erie Lane and demanded the whereabouts of Boxer, without the presence of the police who did not follow the injured victim to the scene of the crime.

    He explained that suddenly, Sunday, who could barely mutter, allegedly slumped and gave up the ghost and upon sensing danger, the alleged murderer fled immediately.

    Okoro-Obaraye recalled how Eguabor had terrorized residents of Erie and its environs with firearms under the toga of Edo State Vigilante Network, Aruosa Command near Igbesamwan street junction.

    Distraught Okoro-Obaraye also revealed that he took Sunday in his vehicle to different hospitals in Benin for urgent medical attention after he slumped, but Sunday was confirmed dead by the doctors.

    He alleged that Eguabor also dealt with several persons in the neighbourhood including a cleric, who was luckily rescued by his church members after the suspect attacked him.

    Okoro-Obaraye said the suspect’s wife, had informed her elder brother who lives in Upper Sokponba Road on a telephone to come to her rescue when she had a fracas with her husband late Saturday, March 18th 2023.

    “Scott’s wife told her brother that her life was in danger. Consequently, the elder brother called Mr Sunday who works in Erie street as a coffin maker but lives on Ski street in Benin intervenes,” he explained. 

    “After Sunday, who was in the church received a phone call from his elder brother, he left his church at about 2 p.m. He (Sunday) greeted me (the eyewitness) in Erie Street and thereafter proceeded to a place called “Mama Joy bar” where Scott was relaxing. 

    “After greeting his brother-in-law (Scott) and his sister, he asked the couple they were always quarreling? Why can’t they stop their incessant quarrel. Suddenly, Scott stood up and gave Sunday a direct punch on his nose and mouth.

    “Immediately Sunday fell, Scott began to shout and ordered that Sunday’s life should be terminated. Consequently, some persons who were present at the scene were lifted Sunday from the floor. Momentarily, Sunday limped out of the scene and began to lament his ordeal.

    “Esigie police immediately prepared an extract for Sunday to go and treat himself at the police Clinic in Benin before Sunday began to make his statement.

    “They (sympathizers) wanted to bring Sunday’s corpse to the paternal home of his killer and I opposed it to avert further bloodshed. I then took his body to the same police station where we were advised to take his body to one of the hospital mortuaries we took him to after the incident for preservation.

    Mr Sunday, a casket maker, had just finished paying over N300,000 debt he incurred after his wife (widow) delivered a baby boy via a Caesarian Section (CS).

    “Who will take care of the young widow and his three children,?”  Okoro-Obaraye queried, while demanding justice.

    FGN Approves N5.16bn To Build 192 Flats For NDLEA Officials

    The Federal Executive Council has approved the sum of N5.16bn, on Wednesday, 22nd-March-2023,  for the construction of two accommodation facilities comprising 192 flats of various room capacities for personnel of the National Drugs Laws Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

    The facility which will be located in Abuja would take the two contractors hired for the project 60 weeks to complete.

    The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, revealed this to State House Correspondents after this week’s Council meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

    Malami premised the approval on the security and safety of the NDLEA’s Narcotics Superintendents and Assistants whom, he said, have come under attack due to their increased anti-drug campaigns.

    He said the campaigns led to 18,940 arrests, N40bn worth of hard drugs seized and 2,904 convictions between the first and third quarters of 2022 alone.

    However, the gains have made NDLEA personnel moving targets for vindictive drug lords, he said.

    The approval comes six months after Council okayed N580.50m for the purchase of four armoured vehicles for the Agency last September.

    At the time, NDLEA had just recovered N194bn worth of cocaine from an Ikorodu warehouse on September 19, 2022. The biggest drug bust in its 33-year history.

    Wednesday’s development also comes exactly one year after the Council approved the sum of N1.07bn for the procurement of eye-scanning lie detectors and night-vision goggles for NDLEA’s war on drugs.

    It brings the total amount of contracts approved for the agency since March 2022 to N6.81bn.

    Rahman confirmed on Wednesday that Tinubu left the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja for Europe on Tuesday night.
    Rahmad, however, noted that the trip was not to because Tinubu fell ill as reported by Sahara Reporters.

     Let me open this short contribution by saying that I completely agree with the views expressed above by Pastor Reno Omokri. Let us hope that those he is attempting to offer such wise counsel appreciate & accept it before it is too late. I am constrained to go further by saying that I also share the views of my dear friend, brother & colleague, Omo Oba Bayo Onanuga, who reflected the views and thoughts of millions of our fellow Yorubas when he expressed deep and legitimate concerns about the attempt by the Ibo community in Lagos to take over our land and claim it as theirs. This is something that they themselves would never tolerate members of any other ethnic nationality to attempt to do in the east and neither would any of us try it. The truth is that if you insist on living in someone elses land or territory you must respect them. And as they say, respect begets respect. If you must live amongst us kindly refrain from poking your fingers into our eyes simply because we gave you the space & afforded you the opportunities that you have refused to offer us in the east. We do this because we are a decent, civilised, kind-hearted, peace-loving and just people who believe strongly in the ethos of charity, plurality of community, efficacy of racial and religious harmony, peaceful-coexistence & full & unfettered integration. That does NOT however mean that we are fools. Our history proves that we are slow to anger but irresistible in battle. It is not wise to provoke us or raise our sleeping sword. Being too kind, accommodating & charitable has its price and it appears that we the Yoruba may have learnt this the hard way. Opening up your home to a stranger & being your brothers keeper is one thing but giving him your head & all that is dear to you on a platter of gold is quite another. The truth is that the Ibo in Lagos are no longer welcome by the people of Lagos. And unless they change their attitude quickly & drastically it may well be better for them to go home. As a consequence of recent events & the outrageous & insulting “Lagos is a no man’s land” battle cry & mantra which many Ibos in Lagos espouse & constantly bellow & mouth, many of our people believe that Alaba Int. Market, Computer Village, Trade Fair & other places that they have occupied & taken over should be evacuated & vacated & converted to schools, deep sea ports, housing estates & amusement parks. That is the level of anger & view of millions of our people today & we ignore those views at our peril. They also believe that we should act fast & make the necessary changes in our attitude to non-Yoruba settlers and aliens and reflect on our propensity for being too “woke” & too liberal in our dealings with them.     Peter Nweke, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Ezza North Local Government Area, of Ebonyi State has died.

    The man, who was allegedly beaten by thugs suspected to be loyal to the ruling All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State, sadly passed away.

    Nweke reportedly died from injuries he sustained from attacks by hoodlums on Saturday 18th-March-2023, during the governorship and state Assembly elections.

    The State’s Police Public Relations Officer, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed his death on Sunday 19th-March, 2023.

    She said Nweke was beaten up and rushed to the hospital unconscious where he was later pronounced dead by a doctor.

    She said the police had launched an investigation into the death with a view to arresting and prosecuting those responsible.

    The younger brother of the deceased, Samson, also confirmed the death to news men.

    Samson had on Saturday informed our correspondent that his brother was beaten into a coma by APC thugs.

    He said, “The thugs, wielding with AK-47 rifles, invaded his Polling Unit 10, Ogboji Ward, Ezza North LGA Ebonyi State. The thugs came in two carter motorcycles and surrounded him and others. They beat my brother, Mr Nweke Peter, till he went into a coma. He was rushed to hospital.

    “The hoodlums were also said to have set ablaze all the electoral materials in the three booths in Ndiagu Ogboji, booths 009, 010 and 011.”

    Samson said his late brother had warned him to be careful as he had received intelligence that the two of them had been marked for elimination.

    He recalled, “Two weeks ago, Peter came visiting me in Abakaliki. I wasn’t in the house but he met my wife. He told my wife to tell me that I should be very careful. He said that a certain political party had penned down some persons in our community for elimination on or before the election date. He said he was number one on the list, that I was number two and that there were three other persons.

    “Today, it happened to us. While I luckily survived it, my brother could not. They killed him at the polling unit. I wish today never came.  How I wish there was never a date called March 18, 2023. My brother wouldn’t have died. A young man so full of life and promise.”

    General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International, Apostle Johnson Suleman has said that the 2023 general elections in Nigeria have proven that the Permanent Voters Card used to cast votes during elections is useless because the leaders force their way into power.

    The clergyman stated this while preaching in his church on Sunday, March 19, 2023. He mentioned that Nigeria is not in any way practicing democracy but rather “Agberocracy” which in his words mean ‘’government of the agency by the agbero for the agbero”.

    He berated politicians for using thugs to snatch ballot boxes during the elections. He also kicked against the tribal sentiments expressed during the election, saying that no one pays tax based on their ethnicity and so the issue of ethnicity during elections should never arise.

    He appealed to Nigerian youths not to be discouraged by the outcome of the elections. He added that what he knows for a fact is that what is built on a false foundation can never stand.

    Umo Eno Of PDP Wins Akwa Ibom State 2023 Governorship Election

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mr Umo Eno of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the winner of the governorship election held on Saturday, March 18th-2023.

    The Returning Officer, Prof. Emmanuel Adigio, Vice Chancellor, Nigerian Maritime University, Delta, announced the results at on Sunday in Uyo.

    Adigio said Eno won in 29 out of 31 Local Government Areas of the state to defeat Sen. Bassey Akpan of the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

    He said that the PDP candidate scored 354,348 votes, beating closet rival, of Young Progressive Party (YPP), who got 136,262 votes.

    He also said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 129,602 votes while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) got 12,509 votes while Labour Party (LP) scored 4,746 votes. (NAN)

    A former Big Brother Nigeria (BBNaija) housemate, Leo Dasilva, has opened up about his business, recounting how his equity firm ran into a huge debt. 

    In a chat with Poco Lee, the dancer, on the ‘Clout Africa’ podcast, Leo spoke about life after BBNaija. 

    The reality star participated in the 2018 BBNaija show titled ‘Double Wahala’ which Miracle Igbokwe won.

    During the interview, Leo disclosed that the business which he founded after leaving the show was affected by the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.

    The reality star said he thereafter ran into hundreds of millions in debt.

    “In my personal life, I am extremely satisfied. Business wise I am very very satisfied because I can’t lie to you I was neck in debt for like three years because I run a private equity firm,” he said. 

    “And in a month before my birthday. I paid off all the debts. Hundreds of millions. 

    “The equity investment for me was like the thing I started after the house. Before I was boxing myself into just real estate but I discovered that my passion was not just for real estate. My passion was for money. I needed something that could bring more money.

    “Sometimes I used to wake up with (fear) that “am I going to court today?” In a manner that a lot of people invested. Some people traveled out of the country. But I made sure that I paid for all of that.

    “It was COVID-19 that really affected me. Not that I took the money and spent it.”

    Leo added that the reality TV show helped shape his brand visibility as a business owner. 

    “My brand has stayed relevant from Big Brother for almost five years. Just spending six weeks in the house, I really love that,” he added. 

    “I have never acted. Never sang any song. All I am now is a working-class, businessman who has clouts and is professionally fine. I am satisfied with that.”

The owner of the farms who claims to be the Ba’ale of Kajola, Akinola Adebayo, 35, was arrested on the farm at 2:30am, while two other suspects believed to be his workers: Arikuyeri Abdulrahman, 23 and Habibu Ologun, 25, were also nabbed in a hut near the farms. 

    In the same vein, a 26-year-old Alayi Madu, who was a Boko Haram fighter for 15 years before he surrendered to the Nigerian military in 2021 was intercepted by NDLEA operatives on Thursday 9th March along Abuja-Kaduna express road with 10 kilograms of skunk, which he said he bought in Ibadan, Oyo state and was taking the consignment concealed in a sack to Maiduguri, Borno state. 

    In his statement, Madu said he is from Banki town, Borno State and joined the notorious terrorist organisation, in 2006 when he was nine years old. He said he repented and surrendered to the military in 2021, after which he underwent rehabilitation and de-radicalization processes at Umaru Shehu rehabilitation centre, Maiduguri and Malam Sidi de-radicalization centre, Gombe before he was discharged after spending six months. Thereafter, he traveled to Ibadan, Oyo state where he worked as commercial motorcycle rider (Okada rider) before going into drug trafficking and his eventual arrest along Abuja-Kaduna express road.

    The bodies were recovered after unknown gunmen attacked   Unguwar Wakili in  Zango Kataf LGA of Kaduna State. 

    In a statement, the authorities said a 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Ungwan Juju, Mabuhu, Ungwan Wakili and Zangon Urban with immediate effect. 

    “This is to allow men of the Nigerian Army to restore peace on that axis,” Yabo Chris Ephraim,Special Assistant (Media) to the Executive Chairman, Zangon Kataf Local Government Council of Kaduna State has said. 

    The police in Kaduna was yet to react to the incident.

    Seven Nigerian Security And Civil Defence Corps Officials Killed By Bandits In Kaduna State Buried (Photos)

    Seven personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) shot dead by bandits in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have been buried.

    The officers were ambushed and killed on Monday, 9th-January, 2023, while on routine duty of protecting Kuriga mining site.

    Their corpses were handed over to families and loved ones at the NSCDC Kaduna Command after a brief interment ceremony.

    The Commandant General of the Corps, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR,  paid his last respect to the slain officers at the lying in state ceremony, held on Saturday, 14th-January, 2023 at the Kaduna State Command of the Corps.

    Dr Audi expressed rude shock while consoling families, friends and loved ones on the sad loss and prayed for the repose of their souls.

    Represented by the Commandant, Kaduna Command, Idris Yahaya Adah, the CG praised the efforts of the gallant officers who lost their lives in defence of the country and described them as “Heroes, never to be forgotten.”

    Addressing people during the ceremony, Dr Audi said, “they died in active service, they fought a good fight with the last drop of blood in their veins to safeguard the country. Although the loss is painful and the tears are much, but God knows best. We cannot question God; therefore, let us live right, be in peace, love and harmony with our fellow men because one day, all of us will give account to God.”

    He described the 7 personnel who died as committed and dedicated members of the Corps who will be greatly missed by colleagues and friends at work.

    “They paid the supreme price for the nation, they died for us, they are our Heroes and we shall always remember them. The world is saddened, the President and Commander in Chief is saddened, Officers and men of the Corps are also saddened. What has happened has happened, we however, look unto God, and pray for forgiveness of their sins and for acceptance on the last day,” he said.

    The CG assured families and next of kins of the deceased of timely dispatch of benefits accruable to them.

    No fewer than 30 passengers and staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) are believed to have been victims of late Saturday’s 7th-January-2023 kidnap by gunmen at the Igueben train sub-station in Edo State.

    The Edo State Police Command Saturday night announced that scores of travellers waiting to board a train from Igueben in Igueben Local Government Area of the state to Warri in Delta State, were kidnapped by suspected herdsmen.

    The command, in a press statement endorsed by its spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor, at about 9.55pm, stated that the incident happened at about 4.00pm Saturday.

    According to the statement, the suspected herdsmen, who were armed with AK 47 rifles, invaded the train station and shot sporadically into the air before herding unspecified number of intending travellers into the bush.

    In the process, some of the passengers, the command added, sustained bullet wounds, just as it assured Nigerians that bush combing and rescue operations had begun.

    Speaking on the development Sunday, the Liaison Officer to Igueben Local Government Area, Best Oseh, said security agencies and paramilitary organisations are combing the forests within in the area so as to rescue the victims and arrest of those behind the dastard act.

    He said: “As I speak, people are in the field all over the place, vigilante, security agencies and other people. Everybody is concerned but we have to be careful with what we divulge so that we won’t jeopardize the processes of what we are doing.

    “As for the category of people kidnapped, some of them are from Igueben, while others are passengers from other places and as for the number for now, we are looking at over 30 but we can only give comprehensive number when preliminary investigations are concluded.”

    Also, a resident in the area, Mr. Odia Benson, said the abductors released two kids who were with them, while a woman reportedly escaped.

    He said some staff of the NRC, including the station manager and ticket clerk, were among those abducted.

    According to him, “The train normally arrives by 5 pm so as at about 20 minutes to that time, bandits just came through the bush path and invaded the place. They took away the station manager, took away the booking clerk and about 29 other passengers made up of males and females.

    “As I speak with you, the Deputy Governor of the state, Philip Shaibu, left the place about an hour ago. The Commissioner of Police and his men are here, men the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army Commander are here, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) and some personnel and many paramilitary representatives are all here, including the DPO Igueben and his men, the Esan Akatakpa Security network. The hunters association have been in the forest since last night doing bush combing. We are hoping that by the end of today, the victims will be rescued.

    “The railway station is surrounded by forest, and there is no security, no police, no vigilante and they are at the mercy of God. The station is in Igeueben town, just about 1.2 km away from Igueben General Hospital.

    “I think only three of the victims are from Igueben; one of them is from Ward 8. We also had another who is married to an Igueben man but based in Warri while others are from Ekpoma, Uromi, Ubiaja, and elsewhere outside Edo State.

    “The kidnappers released two children, it is believed that they felt the children will slow down their movements. They dropped them in an abandoned petrol station. They called the family of the mother of the children that they should go and pick the children from the place they dropped them. One woman also escaped with her little baby. The woman escaped and found herself in Opoji  which in Esan Central Local Government Area.”

    His father, the Oloye Michael Agbolade Adenuga Sr, served as a school teacher, while his mother, Omoba Juliana Oyindamola Adenuga, was a businesswoman of royal Ijebu descent.

    Mike Adenuga earned his secondary school education at the Ibadan Grammar School, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, and attended Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro, for his Higher School Certificate (HSC). He worked as a taxi driver to help fund his university education back then.

    His hustle paid off as he graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Pace University, New York, respectively, with degrees in Business Administration.

    Mike Adenuga made his first million in 1979, at the age of 26, selling lace and distributing soft drinks. In 1990, he was handed a drilling license. In 1991, Consolidated Oil struck oil in the shallow waters of Southwestern Ondo State, becoming the first indigenous oil company to do so in commercial quantity.

    Furthermore, he was issued a conditional GSM license in 1999, though it was revoked. Notwithstanding, he received a second one when the government-held another auction in 2003. He immediately launched a telecom company called Globacom, and operation spread quickly and started challenging telecom giant and biggest rival MTN Group in the communication Industry.

    Globacom launched its services in the Benin republic in 2008 and has continued its spread across Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, with more licenses currently being prospected in other West African countries.

    Mike Adenuga‘s hard work did not go unnoticed as he was named African Entrepreneur of The Year at the first African Telecoms Awards (ATA) in August 2007.

    In May 2015, he made a sensational takeover bid to purchase an Ivorian mobile telecom operator Comium Côte d’Ivoire for US$600 million.

    Early Life

    Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, who is of Ondo descent, was born in Lagos State. He was born on the 7th of February, 1978, in Lagos, Nigeria.

    Early Life

    Nadia Buari was born in the remote town of Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana, to a Lebanese father and a Ghanaian mother on November 21, 1982. Her parents are Sidiku Buari (father) and Hajia Buari (mother).

    She has five siblings: Malik Buari, Aysha Buari, Shaida Buari, Jameel Buari, and Jeed Rogers.

    “Aubameyang looked like he did not want to be here this evening. He’s not the only one. Cucurella, they have spent an absolute fortune on him and he looks well, well short for a Chelsea team that wants to win trophies,” Sutton told BBC.

    “I wonder whether Graham Potter is thinking, how can I play Aubameyang again in a Chelsea jersey after how woeful he was.

    “I’m always wary of criticising players for lack of effort or poor body language, but Aubameyang absolutely epitomised that – I thought he was woeful and hopeless and didn’t give anywhere near enough.

    Russia’s President “Putin” Tells Ukraine He Is Ready For Peace Talks

    Russian president, Vladimir Putin has revealed that he’s open for peace talks with Ukraine to end the war, but only if Kyiv accepts ‘new territorial realities’.

    The Kremlin claims it has annexed the Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions despite not controlling them in their entirety.

    The Kremlin said on Thursday January 5th, 2023 that Putin told Erdogan peace talks are possible, but only if Ukraine accepts that territories occupied by Moscow as Russian.

    ‘Putin again confirmed Russia’s openness to serious dialogue on the condition of Kyiv authorities fulfilling the well-known and repeatedly voiced requirements of taking into account the new territorial realities,’ the Kremlin said in a statement.

    Erdogan had called for peace talks in the phone call with Putin, his office said earlier.

    ‘The Russian side emphasised the destructive role of Western states, pumping the Kyiv regime with weapons and military equipment, providing it with operational information and targets,’ the statement from the Kremlin added.

    This is not the first time Putin has expressed that he is ready for peace talks under the conditions set out by Moscow.

    On Christmas Day, in an interview with state television about the war in Ukraine, Putin said that Russia is ‘prepared to negotiate some acceptable outcomes’.

    The leaders also discussed the implementation of a landmark grain deal, brokered by the UN with the help of Turkey, to unblock Ukrainian grain.

    The Kremlin said the pair discussed ‘the unblocking of food and fertiliser supplies from Russia’ and the need for ‘the removal of all barriers to Russian exports.’

    Napoleon Bonaparte (born Napoleone Buonaparte; 15th-August, 1769 – 5th-May, 1821), later known by his regnal name Napoleon I, was a French military commander and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars. He was the de facto leader of the French Republic as First Consul from 1799 to 1804, then Emperor of the French from 1804 until 1814 and again in 1815. Napoleon’s political and cultural legacy endures to this day, as a highly celebrated and controversial leader. He initiated many liberal reforms that have persisted in society, and is considered one of the greatest military commanders in history. His wars and campaigns are studied by militaries all over the world. Between three and six million civilians and soldiers perished in what became known as the Napoleonic Wars.

    Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica, not long after its annexation by France, to a native family descending from minor Italian nobility. He supported the French Revolution in 1789 while serving in the French army, and tried to spread its ideals to his native Corsica. He rose rapidly in the Army after he saved the governing French Directory by firing on royalist insurgents. In 1796, he began a military campaign against the Austrians and their Italian allies, scoring decisive victories and becoming a national hero. Two years later, he led a military expedition to Egypt that served as a springboard to political power. He engineered a coup in November 1799 and became First Consul of the Republic.

    Differences with the United Kingdom meant France faced the War of the Third Coalition by 1805. Napoleon shattered this coalition with victories in the Ulm campaign, and at the Battle of Austerlitz, which led to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1806, the Fourth Coalition took up arms against him. Napoleon defeated Prussia at the battles of Jena and Auerstedt, marched the Grande Armée into Eastern Europe, and defeated the Russians in June 1807 at Friedland, forcing the defeated nations of the Fourth Coalition to accept the Treaties of Tilsit. Two years later, the Austrians challenged the French again during the War of the Fifth Coalition, but Napoleon solidified his grip over Europe after triumphing at the Battle of Wagram.

    Hoping to extend the Continental System, his embargo against Britain, Napoleon invaded the Iberian Peninsula and declared his brother Joseph the King of Spain in 1808. The Spanish and the Portuguese revolted in the Peninsular War aided by a British army, culminating in defeat for Napoleon’s marshals. Napoleon launched an invasion of Russia in the summer of 1812. The resulting campaign witnessed the catastrophic retreat of Napoleon’s Grande Armée. In 1813, Prussia and Austria joined Russian forces in a Sixth Coalition against France, resulting in a large coalition army defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig. The coalition invaded France and captured Paris, forcing Napoleon to abdicate in April 1814. He was exiled to the island of Elba, between Corsica and Italy. In France, the Bourbons were restored to power.

    Napoleon escaped in February 1815 and took control of France. The Allies responded by forming a Seventh Coalition, which defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. The British exiled him to the remote island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic, where he died in 1821 at the age of 51.

    Napoleon had an extensive impact on the modern world, bringing liberal reforms to the lands he conquered, especially the regions of the Low Countries, Switzerland and parts of modern Italy and Germany. He implemented many liberal policies in France and Western Europe.

    Napoleon’s family was of Italian origin. His paternal ancestors, the Buonapartes, descended from a minor Tuscan noble family who emigrated to Corsica in the 16th century and his maternal ancestors, the Ramolinos, descended from a minor Genoese noble family. The Buonapartes were also the relatives, by marriage and by birth, of the Pietrasentas, Costas, Paraviccinis, and Bonellis, all Corsican families of the interior. His parents Carlo Maria di Buonaparte and Maria Letizia Ramolino maintained an ancestral home called “Casa Buonaparte” in Ajaccio. Napoleon was born there, on 15 August 1769. He was the fourth child and third son of the family. He had an elder brother, Joseph, and younger siblings Lucien, Elisa, Louis, Pauline, Caroline, and Jérôme. Napoleon was baptised as a Catholic, under the name Napoleone. In his youth, his name was also spelled as Nabulione, Nabulio, Napolionne, and Napulione.

    Napoleon was born in the same year that the Republic of Genoa (former Italian state) ceded the region of Corsica to France. The state sold sovereign rights a year before his birth and the island was conquered by France during the year of his birth. It was formally incorporated as a province in 1770, after 500 years under Genoese rule and 14 years of independence. Napoleon’s parents joined the Corsican resistance and fought against the French to maintain independence, even when Maria was pregnant with him. His father Carlo was an attorney who had supported and actively collaborated with patri*t Pasquale Paoli during the Corsican war of independence against France; after the Corsican defeat at Ponte Novu in 1769 and Paoli’s exile in Britain, Carlo began working for the new French government and went on to be named representative of the island to the court of Louis XVI in 1777.

    The dominant influence of Napoleon’s childhood was his mother, whose firm discipline restrained a rambunctious child. Later in life, Napoleon stated, “The future destiny of the child is always the work of the mother. Napoleon’s maternal grandmother had married into the Swiss Fesch family in her second marriage, and Napoleon’s uncle, the cardinal Joseph Fesch, would fulfill a role as protector of the Bonaparte family for some years. Napoleon’s noble, moderately affluent background afforded him greater opportunities to study than were available to a typical Corsican of the time.

    When he turned 9 years old, he moved to the French mainland and enrolled at a religious school in Autun in January 1779. In May, he transferred with a scholarship to a military academy at Brienne-le-Château. In his youth he was an outspoken Corsican nationalist and supported the state’s independence from France. Like many Corsicans, Napoleon spoke and read Corsican (as his mother tongue) and Italian (as the official language of Corsica). He began learning French in school at around age 10. Although he became fluent in French, he spoke with a distinctive Corsican accent and never learned how to spell correctly in French. Consequently, Napoleon was treated unfairly by his schoolmates. He was, however, not an isolated case, as it was estimated in 1790 that fewer than 3 million people, out of France’s population of 28 million, were able to speak standard French, and those who could write it were even fewer.

    Napoleon was routinely bullied by his peers for his accent, birthplace, short stature, mannerisms and inability to speak French quickly. He became reserved and melancholy, applying himself to reading. An examiner observed that Napoleon “has always been distinguished for his application in mathematics. He is fairly well acquainted with history and geography … This boy would make an excellent sailor”.

    One story told of Napoleon at the school is that he led junior students to victory against senior students in a snowball fight, showing his leadership abilities. In early adulthood, Napoleon briefly intended to become a writer; he authored a history of Corsica and a romantic novella.

    On completion of his studies at Brienne in 1784, Napoleon was admitted to the École Militaire in Paris. He trained to become an artillery officer and, when his father’s death reduced his income, was forced to complete the two-year course in one year. He was the first Corsican to graduate from the École Militaire. He was examined by the famed scientist Pierre-Simon Laplace.

    Early career

    Upon graduating in September 1785, Bonaparte was commissioned a second lieutenant in La Fère artillery regiment at aged 23. He served in Valence and Auxonne until after the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. Bonaparte was a fervent Corsican nationalist during this period. He asked for leave to join his mentor Pasquale Paoli, when Paoli was allowed to return to Corsica by the National Assembly. Paoli had no sympathy for Napoleon, however, as he deemed his father a traitor for having deserted his cause for Corsican independence.

    He spent the early years of the Revolution in Corsica, fighting in a complex three-way struggle among royalists, revolutionaries, and Corsican nationalists. Napoleon came to embrace the ideals of the Revolution, becoming a supporter of the Jacobins and joining the pro-French Corsican Republicans who opposed Paoli’s policy and his aspirations of secession. He was given command over a battalion of volunteers and was promoted to captain in the regular army in July 1792, despite exceeding his leave of absence and leading a ri*t against French troops.

    When Corsica declared formal secession from France and requested the protection of the British government, Napoleon and his commitment to the French Revolution came into conflict with Paoli, who had decided to sabotage the Corsican contribution to the Expédition de Sardaigne, by preventing a French assault on the Sardinian island of La Maddalena. Bonaparte and his family were compelled to flee to Toulon on the French mainland in June 1793 because of the split with Paoli.

    Although he was born “Napoleone Buonaparte”, it was after this that Napoleon began styling himself “Napoléon Bonaparte”. His family did not drop the name Buonaparte until 1796. The first known record of him signing his name as Bonaparte was at the age of 27 (in 1796).

    Siege of Toulon

    In July 1793, Bonaparte published a pro-republican pamphlet entitled Le souper de Beaucaire (Supper at Beaucaire) which gained him the support of Augustin Robespierre, the younger brother of the Revolutionary leader Maximilien Robespierre. With the help of his fellow Corsican Antoine Christophe Saliceti, Bonaparte was appointed senior gunner and artillery commander of the republican forces which arrived on 8th-September at Toulon.

    He adopted a plan to capture a hill where republican guns could dominate the city’s harbour and force the British to evacuate. The assault on the position led to the capture of the city, and during it Bonaparte was wounded in the thigh on 16 December. Catching the attention of the Committee of Public Safety, he was put in charge of the artillery of France’s Army of Italy. On 22 December he was on his way to his new post in Nice, promoted from the rank of colonel to brigadier general at the age of 24. He devised plans for attacking the Kingdom of Sardinia as part of France’s campaign against the First Coalition.

    The French army carried out Bonaparte’s plan in the Battle of Saorgio in April 1794, and then advanced to seize Ormea in the mountains. From Ormea, they headed west to outflank the Austro-Sardinian positions around Saorge. After this campaign, Augustin Robespierre sent Bonaparte on a mission to the Republic of Genoa to determine that country’s intentions towards France.

    13 Vendémiaire

    Some contemporaries alleged that Bonaparte was put under house arrest at Nice for his association with the Robespierres following their fall in the Thermidorian Reaction in July 1794. Napoleon’s secretary Bourrienne disputed the allegation in his memoirs. According to Bourrienne, jealousy was responsible, between the Army of the Alps and the Army of Italy, with whom Napoleon was seconded at the time. Bonaparte dispatched an impassioned defence in a letter to the commissar Saliceti, and he was acquitted of any wrongdoing.

     He was released within two weeks (on 20 August) and due to his technical skills, was asked to draw up plans to attack Italian positions in the context of France’s war with Austria. He also took part in an expedition to take back Corsica from the British, but the French were repulsed by the British Royal Navy.

    By 1795, Bonaparte had become engaged to Désirée Clary, daughter of François Clary. Désirée’s sister Julie Clary had married Bonaparte’s elder brother Joseph. In April 1795, he was assigned to the Army of the West, which was engaged in the War in the Vendée—a civil war and royalist counter-revolution in Vendée, a region in west-central France on the Atlantic Ocean. As an infantry command, it was a demotion from artillery general—for which the army already had a full quota—and he pleaded poor health to avoid the posting.

    He was moved to the Bureau of Topography of the Committee of Public Safety. He sought unsuccessfully to be transferred to Constantinople in order to offer his services to the Sultan. During this period, he wrote the romantic novella Clisson et Eugénie, about a soldier and his lover, in a clear parallel to Bonaparte’s own relationship with Désirée. On 15 September, Bonaparte was removed from the list of generals in regular service for his refusal to serve in the Vendée campaign. He faced a difficult financial situation and reduced career prospects.

    On 3 October, royalists in Paris declared a rebellion against the National Convention. Paul Barras, a leader of the Thermidorian Reaction, knew of Bonaparte’s military exploits at Toulon and gave him command of the improvised forces in defence of the convention in the Tuileries Palace. Napoleon had seen the massacre of the King’s Swiss Guard there three years earlier and realized that artillery would be the key to its defence.

    He ordered a young cavalry officer named Joachim Murat to seize large cannons and used them to repel the attackers on 5 October 1795—13 Vendémiaire An IV in the French Republican Calendar. 1,400 royalists died and the rest fled. He cleared the streets with “a whiff of grapeshot”, according to 19th-century historian Thomas Carlyle in The French Revolution: A History.

    The defeat of the royalist insurrection extinguished the threat to the Convention and earned Bonaparte sudden fame, wealth, and the patronage of the new government, the Directory. Murat married one of Napoleon’s sisters, becoming his brother-in-law; he also served under Napoleon as one of his generals. Bonaparte was promoted to Commander of the Interior and given command of the Army of Italy.

    Within weeks, he was romantically involved with Joséphine de Beauharnais, the former mistress of Barras. The couple married on 9 March 1796 in a civil ceremony.

    First Italian campaign

    Two days after the marriage, Bonaparte left Paris to take command of the Army of Italy. He immediately went on the offensive, hoping to defeat the forces of Piedmont before their Austrian allies could intervene. In a series of rapid victories during the Montenotte Campaign, he knocked Piedmont out of the war in two weeks. The French then focused on the Austrians for the remainder of the war, the highlight of which became the protracted struggle for Mantua. The Austrians launched a series of offensives against the French to break the siege, but Napoleon defeated every relief effort, scoring victories at the battles of Castiglione, Bassano, Arcole, and Rivoli. The decisive French triumph at Rivoli in January 1797 led to the collapse of the Austrian position in Italy. At Rivoli, the Austrians lost up to 14,000 men while the French lost about 5,000.

    The next phase of the campaign featured the French invasion of the Habsburg heartlands. French forces in Southern Germany had been defeated by the Archduke Charles in 1796, but the Archduke withdrew his forces to protect Vienna after learning about Napoleon’s assault. In the first encounter between the two commanders, Napoleon pushed back his opponent and advanced deep into Austrian territory after winning at the Battle of Tarvis in March 1797. The Austrians were alarmed by the French thrust that reached all the way to Leoben, about 100 km from Vienna, and decided to sue for peace.

    The Treaty of Leoben, followed by the more comprehensive Treaty of Campo Formio, gave France control of most of northern Italy and the Low Countries, and a secret clause promised the Republic of Venice to Austria. Bonaparte marched on Venice and forced its surrender, ending 1,100 years of Venetian independence. He authorized the French to loot treasures such as the Horses of Saint Mark. On the journey, Bonaparte conversed much about the warriors of antiquity, especially Alexander, Caesar, Scipio and Hannibal. He studied their strategy and combined it with his own. In a question from Bourrienne, asking whether he gave his preference to Alexander or Caesar, Napoleon said that he places Alexander the Great in the first rank, the main reason being his campaign in Asia.

    His application of conventional military ideas to real-world situations enabled his military triumphs, such as creative use of artillery as a mobile force to support his infantry. He stated later in life: “I have fought sixty battles and I have learned nothing which I did not know at the beginning. Look at Caesar; he fought the first like the last”.

    Bonaparte could win battles by concealment of troop deployments and concentration of his forces on the “hinge” of an enemy’s weakened front. If he could not use his favourite envelopment strategy, he would take up the central position and attack two co-operating forces at their hinge, swing round to fight one until it fled, then turn to face the other. In this Italian campaign, Bonaparte’s army captured 150,000 prisoners, 540 cannons, and 170 standards. The French army fought 67 actions and won 18 pitched battles through superior artillery technology and Bonaparte’s tactics.

    During the campaign, Bonaparte became increasingly influential in French politics. He founded two newspapers: one for the troops in his army and another for circulation in France. The royalists attacked Bonaparte for looting Italy and warned that he might become a dictator. Napoleon’s forces extracted an estimated $45 million in funds from Italy during their campaign there, another $12 million in precious metals and jewels. His forces confiscated more than 300 priceless paintings and sculptures.

    Bonaparte sent General Pierre Augereau to Paris to lead a coup d’état and purge the royalists on 4th September—the Coup of 18 Fructidor. This left Barras and his Republican allies in control again but dependent upon Bonaparte, who proceeded to peace negotiations with Austria. These negotiations resulted in the Treaty of Campo Formio. Bonaparte returned to Paris in December 1797 as a hero. He met Talleyrand, France’s new Foreign Minister—who served in the same capacity for Emperor Napoleon—and they began to prepare for an invasion of Britain.

    Egyptian expedition

    After two months of planning, Bonaparte decided that France’s naval strength was not yet sufficient to confront the British Royal Navy. He decided on a military expedition to seize Egypt and thereby undermine Britain’s access to its trade interests in India. Bonaparte wished to establish a French presence in the Middle East and join forces with Tipu Sultan, the Sultan of Mysore who was an enemy of the British. Napoleon assured the Directory that “as soon as he had conquered Egypt, he will establish relations with the Indian princes and, together with them, attack the English in their possessions”. The Directory agreed in order to secure a trade route to the Indian subcontinent.

    In May 1798, Bonaparte was elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences. His Egyptian expedition included a group of 167 scientists, with mathematicians, naturalists, chemists, and geodesists among them. Their discoveries included the Rosetta Stone, and their work was published in the Description de l’Égypte in 1809.

    En route to Egypt, Bonaparte reached Malta on 9 June 1798, then controlled by the Knights Hospitaller. Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim surrendered after token resistance, and Bonaparte captured an important naval base with the loss of only three men.

    Bonaparte and his expedition eluded pursuit by the Royal Navy and landed at Alexandria on 1 July. He fought the Battle of Shubra Khit against the Mamluks, Egypt’s ruling military caste. This helped the French practise their defensive tactic for the Battle of the Pyramids, fought on 21 July, about 24 km (15 mi) from the pyramids. General Bonaparte’s forces of 25,000 roughly equalled those of the Mamluks’ Egyptian cavalry. Twenty-nine French and approximately 2,000 Egyptians were killed. The victory boosted the morale of the French army.

    On 1 August 1798, the British fleet under Sir Horatio Nelson captured or destroyed all but two vessels of the French fleet in the Battle of the Nile, defeating Bonaparte’s goal to strengthen the French position in the Mediterranean. His army had succeeded in a temporary increase of French power in Egypt, though it faced repeated uprisings. In early 1799, he moved an army into the Ottoman province of Damascus (Syria and Galilee). Bonaparte led these 13,000 French soldiers in the conquest of the coastal towns of Arish, Gaza, Jaffa, and Haifa. The attack on Jaffa was particularly brutal. Bonaparte discovered that many of the defenders were former prisoners of war, ostensibly on parole, so he ordered the garrison and some 1,500–2,000 prisoners to be executed by bayonet or drowning. Men, women, and children were robbed and murdered for three days.

    Bonaparte began with an army of 13,000 men. 1,500 were reported missing, 1,200 died in combat, and thousands perished from disease—mostly bubonic plague. He failed to reduce the fortress of Acre, so he marched his army back to Egypt in May. To speed up the retreat, Bonaparte ordered plague-stricken men to be poisoned with opium. The number who died remains disputed, ranging from a low of 30 to a high of 580. He also brought out 1,000 wounded men. Back in Egypt on 25 July, Bonaparte defeated an Ottoman amphibious invasion at Abukir.

    Ruler of France

    While in Egypt, Bonaparte stayed informed of European affairs. He learned that France had suffered a series of defeats in the War of the Second Coalition. On 24 August 1799, fearing that the Republic’s future was in doubt, he took advantage of the temporary departure of British ships from French coastal ports and set sail for France, despite the fact that he had received no explicit orders from Paris. The army was left in the charge of Jean-Baptiste Kléber.

    Unknown to Bonaparte, the Directory had sent him orders to return to ward off possible invasions of French soil, but poor lines of communication prevented the delivery of these messages. By the time that he reached Paris in October, France’s situation had been improved by a series of victories. The Republic, however, was bankrupt and the ineffective Directory was unpopular with the French population. The Directory discussed Bonaparte’s “desertion” but was too weak to punish him.

    Despite the failures in Egypt, Napoleon returned to a hero’s welcome. He drew together an alliance with director Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès, his brother Lucien, speaker of the Council of Five Hundred Roger Ducos, director Joseph Fouché, and Talleyrand, and they overthrew the Directory by a coup d’état on 9 November 1799 (“the 18th Brumaire” according to the revolutionary calendar), closing down the Council of Five Hundred. Napoleon became “first consul” for ten years, with two consuls appointed by him who had consultative voices only. His power was confirmed by the new “Constitution of the Year VIII”, originally devised by Sieyès to give Napoleon a minor role, but rewritten by Napoleon, and accepted by direct popular vote (3,000,000 in favour, 1,567 opposed). The constitution preserved the appearance of a republic but, in reality, established a dictatorship.

    French Consulate

    Napoleon established a political system that historian Martyn Lyons called “dictatorship by plebiscite”. Worried by the democratic forces unleashed by the Revolution, but unwilling to ignore them entirely, Napoleon resorted to regular electoral consultations with the French people on his road to imperial power. He drafted the Constitution of the Year VIII and secured his own election as First Consul, taking up residence at the Tuileries. The constitution was approved in a rigged plebiscite held the following January, with 99.94 percent officially listed as voting “yes”.

    Napoleon’s brother, Lucien, had falsified the returns to show that 3 million people had participated in the plebiscite. The real number was 1.5 million. Political observers at the time assumed the eligible French voting public numbered about 5 million people, so the regime artificially doubled the participation rate to indicate popular enthusiasm for the consulate. In the first few months of the consulate, with war in Europe still raging and internal instability still plaguing the country, Napoleon’s grip on power remained very tenuous.

    In the spring of 1800, Napoleon and his troops crossed the Swiss Alps into Italy, aiming to surprise the Austrian armies that had reoccupied the peninsula when Napoleon was still in Egypt. After a difficult crossing over the Alps, the French army entered the plains of Northern Italy virtually unopposed. While one French army approached from the north, the Austrians were busy with another stationed in Genoa, which was besieged by a substantial force. The fierce resistance of this French army, under André Masséna, gave the northern force some time to carry out their operations with little interference.
