Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has won the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) rescheduled governorship primary election, following his failure to win the party’s presidential primary a week ago on May 28.

At the conclusion of the governorship primary election on Saturday, June 4 in Bauchi, the returning officer and chairman of the governorship primary election committee, Murtala Damagum, declared Mr Mohammed the winner.

He said that the governor, as the only candidate in the election, received 646 votes out of the 650 delegates in attendance.

Mr Mohammed expressed his gratitude to the party and the delegates for the smooth running of the event in his acceptance speech.

He predicted that the party would win big in the 2018 general elections, saying that “in the last three years of our administration, we have impacted positively through infrastructure provision and excellent governance.”

“Politics is a nice game and we will continue to play it with dignity, decorum, and not as a do-or-die situation,” he remarked.

The rescheduled governorship primary follows Ibrahim Kashim’s voluntary withdrawal after winning the state election on May 28.

Mr Kashim, the Secretary to the State Government, resigned, entered the PDP governorship campaign, and won 655 votes to become the party’s flag bearer, while Mr Mohammed ran for the party’s presidential ticket.

Following Atiku Abubakar’s nomination as the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, the governor returned to the state to seek re-election in the 2023 general elections.
