President Joe Biden has proposed that the US ban assault-style guns and high-capacity magazines to address the “carnage” of gun violence on Thursday, June 2, 2022.

After a string of major shootings, Vice President Joe Biden addressed the nation, saying that too many areas had turned into “killing fields.”

If a prohibition is not practicable, he believes the age limit for purchasing such weapons should be raised from 18 to 21.

However, because Republicans and Democrats in Congress are deadlocked on the subject, progress is considered doubtful.

To enact any legislation, Republicans in the Senate must support it, which is doubtful because they defend gun ownership as a constitutional right for all Americans.

Even if some people privately support stronger gun laws, as one analyst told the BBC, they may be afraid of the electoral ramifications of doing so.

Red flag rules, which allow authorities to seize guns from persons who are at high risk of hurting themselves or others, are currently the only area where bipartisan consensus is achievable.

Mr. Biden stated, “This is not about taking away anyone’s guns.” “This isn’t about robbing someone of their rights… It’s all about safeguarding youngsters.”

“Why in God’s name should an ordinary citizen be able to buy an assault weapon with 30-round magazines that allows mass shooters to discharge hundreds of bullets in a couple of minutes?” added the Democratic president.

Mr. Biden praised a 1994 assault weapons ban that he helped pass. It expired after ten years, and the controversy over whether it was effective in decreasing gun violence has raged ever since.

His comments follow a tragic shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas last week, in which 21 people were killed, including 19 children.

In recent days, mass shootings have occurred in Buffalo, New York, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
