Pat Utomi steps down for Peter Obi who has emerged 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party
Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
He emerged at the Labour Party’s convention and presidential primary held in Asaba, Delta State.
This comes after another presidential aspirant on the platform of the party, Prof. Pat Utomi, stepped down for Obi, who only joined the party last week.
Utomi, a renowned professor of political economy, had stepped down and endorsed Obi at the venue of the party’s presidential primaries in Delta.
Utomi announced that Obi is a younger aspirant with the capacity to effect the needed change in the Nigerian system.
Also, another aspirant, 45-year-old Joseph Faduri also stepped down for the former governor.
It would be recalled that Obi left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last week, blaming the recent developments in the party for his defection.
Obi had made the announcement in a letter dated May 25, 2022, and titled, ‘Resignation From Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Withdrawal from the Presidential Contest.’
Obi will be facing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and whoever emerges as the flagbearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 election.
