Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been elected as the Peoples Democratic Party’s flagbearer for the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 election, trounced Nyesom Wike the Rivers State governor, former Senate president, Bukola Saraki, Emmanuel Udom, Cross River State governor ro clinch the ticket.

Atiku scored 371 votes while Wike, polled 237 votes and Saraki pulled 70 votes.

Emmanuel polled 38 votes, Anyim Pius Anyim 14, Mrs Tari Diana Oliver 1 and Sam Ohuabunwa 1 vote.

Before voting commenced on Friday at the primary election in Abuja, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal stepped down for Atiku, a move that strengthened the Adamawa politician’s bid for the ticket.

Speaking after winning, Atiku said, “Today, the march to rebuild and unite our great country moves forward. I am honoured to be named the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party.

“I look forward to speaking with Nigerians across the country, taking the message of hope and unity as we build one future for one people.

This will be 75-year-old Atiku’s sixth attempt for the nation’s top job.
