The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) announced on Thursday, May 26, 2022 that it will eliminate 1,000 positions and cancel some traditional broadcast channels as it focuses on digital and deals with a funding freeze.

The BBC claimed it would “evolve in pace with the modern world, delivering audiences the content they want… in the ways they want it,” with the goal of becoming a digital-first public service media organization.

The network will merge with BBC World and create a single 24-hour television news channel that will serve the UK and the rest of the world.

CBBC, BBC Four, and Radio 4 Extra, among others, will cease traditional broadcasting, while “a number” of World Service language stations will go digital-only.

On Thursday, Director-General Tim Davie addressed BBC employees, hailing “a fresh, new, global digital media organization that has never been seen before.”

He advised them, “We need to evolve faster and embrace the massive shifts in the market around us.”

The first phase of the adjustments, which include job losses, will save £500 million (585 million euros, $630 million) every year, with £200 million of that going toward filling the £285 million budget gap left by the government’s decision to freeze the television license charge earlier this year.

“The BBC will also inject £300 million to foster a digital-first approach, through adjustments to content and output, as well as additional commercial revenue,” according to the statement.

The BBC, which is celebrating its centenary this year, said further information will be released in the coming months.

Since the UK’s acrimonious Brexit referendum in 2016, right-wingers have accused the broadcaster of political prejudice and pushing a “woke,” London-centric liberal agenda.

Similar charges have been levelled against the BBC, which was formed by Royal Charter and operates independently of the government.

When Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries announced the license-fee freeze, critics accused her of “cultural vandalism” and ruining a world-renowned British institution.

The charge, which is paid by every household with a television, supports BBC television, radio, and online services, as well as programming, most of which is commercially distributed around the world.

Supporters argue that the cost now £159 for a color TV represents excellent value for money, with a wide choice of programming ranging from news and current events to wildlife documentaries, children’s programming, theatre, and music.

However, critics, notably rival commercial broadcasters, have long said that the guaranteed financing model, which penalizes non-payers, is unfair.
